By making the AI horrible it helps give it a randomized factor/unpredictably, making it more realistic. But I agree it's lame.

Not saying this is good or bad, but if one knows this, then clear any targets on both sides of where you want the King to go. If there's nothing to attack to the right and left of him, he'll go straight. If there's a wall there, use a WB to blow a hole first before dropping the King. If you take the time to watch how different troops react to different situations, you'll be way ahead in the game.

LOL. Its true - they are stupid. I was just in a battle. My queen sat there shooting a wall while the defending queen stood right behind that same exact wall and shot my quuen down. Shoot the wall disorder!
