Boosts and time...I wouldn't gem resources. Made that mistake recently when I was doing the math and actually bought gold. Wasn't happy.
Always my money makers first! Hero and troop upgrades, then move on to defenses.

I'd boost barracks even when I don't have 2 hours play time available.
50k / 70 gems per boost = 714 boosts.
One boost a day on week days and 4 boost a day on week end. Nice!
I would simply ask:
"Can you convert those gems back to dollars and give me? I don't need gems right now."
