The fact that they only seek out air defense seems pretty lame compared to golems who hit all defenses.
AI pathing all over the base just to find an air defense makes them difficult to use effectively

So no.
Gotcha.
No one in our clan has Lava Hounds (yet), but we have had a number of attacks against us that have been very successful when paired with Loons and Drags. There is a sound strategy for using these that I think I will be giving a try once I get those troops available in a month or so.
I just used 1 level 1 lava hound(in cc), 8 level 3 drags and 12 level 5 loons, with 3 rage and 1 heal. 2 star (91%) on a young th9 (i'm a young th9 too), with a core of air defenses, levels 7, 7, 6 and 3, and two sky facing level 1 xbows. Lava hound did it's job fine. After watching the replay a couple times I know how I could have 3 starred. I should have saved out 3 loons for the backside defenses that my remaining drags and queen couldn't get to quickly enough. My Level 6 loons will afford the army comp more flexibility, they're done in 3 days.
Next time i'll do 8 level 6 loons for the core 2-4 for the back side, maybe 2 loons and 5 minions.
The Lava hound did it's job. I cleared the defenses on one side with the drags and archer queen, when I was sure the loon would go straight for the core I deployed them, waited a sec and then deployed the Hound (hound is much faster). The hounds job was to tank for the loons and mitigate how much damage the drags took for that time it took the loons to rage in and rage out. So my troops would have enough life for clean up. As I said it was only a 2 star but I know that I could have 3 starred and will next time.
- its good it goes to air defense. Whats the point of taking tank damage vs a canon or a mortar?
- Its simple AI, go to nearest air defence. It is probably the easiest AI unit to use.
- Makes it more effective. See my first point.
- When they die, you get free minions on fire
It'd be cool if they went to every air type defender. AD, Archers, Wiz Tower. As opposed to pathing across an entire base without support since nothing else paths similarly.
They essentially become a troop that works with your DPS at the first site, then gets lost afterwards. Kinda sucks for something that takes up 30 troop spots
I use mainly Max GoWiWi for attacking but to bust in some variety i'll use Lava Hounds in a max Drag raid with lightning. They also do well with max balloon raid. Lava Hounds I believe are a misunderstood troop. The biggest gripe is that they dish out hardly any damage. But that's the point. They just hang tough while they soak up the damage. Meanwhile your drags or balloons are taking care of business. The fun part is when they explode, and the lava pups take over and help clean up. They have better damage output to help your drags or balloons finish the job. In my opinion, this is where supercell could improve this troop by giving the pups more hitpoints and dps per upgrade. Instead, you only get higher hit points on the hounds and the pups remain the same. Overall they are cool to use in raids and in WAR. I think with time, and development, lava hounds will dominate. Right now it's a cool troop that is simply not used right or pushed aside because of low initial DPS.
i really like this troop and have been craving a proper "meat shield" for our expensive Max Drag attacks. I think Lava Hounds are here to stay and will get better.
Not me lol:cool:they suck in my opinion.
Yes, I use them all the time. They are great, you clearly don't see it yet, but you will.
Here are some balavion tests i did in cw few weeks ago..

I've made some adjustments with the combo and now, it's lot better.
Lava Hound is meat shield and yes, it targets AD... but if you deploy them right and make them cross the base to reach the AD at the other side, it will get all the defenses attention and has the same effect as you were using a freeze spell.
They are surprising effective against mass dragons attacks. Once they explode into lava pups it steers the dragons away which allows your AD's more time to strike the dragons down. They are also not that bad against more conventional armies.
My one complaint is that they take 30 slots which mean it only benefits TH9 players when TH7 could really use them.
Im hoping to use them, but can't find a good reliable guide on using them. If anyone could point me in the right directin, that would be greatly appreciated.
I use balloonian with lava hounds every war, and I can say without a doubt it is the best th9 vs. th9 strategy there is. I have maxed th9 troops and level 17 queen 18 queen, and consistantly get 6 stars in war. I honestly think they are extremely undervalued and once people play with them more they will become more popular. For me, the key was determining which bases to attack. You want to attack bases where the ad's are close together, preferably in the core, so your loons decimate them all at once. Also, deploy the hounds AFTER your loons so they reach the ad's just as the rest of your troops do. Using this strategy I have 3 starred maxed th'9s on occasion, and anything less than max I am almost guarenteed i will get 3 stars. They take a little fiddling, but once you understand them, hounds are powerful troops
I have been using them for war and I've been 2 starring max th10's. I'll use a couple to distract the AD followed by loons and minions. When they have cleared a side of the base i let my heroes go straight to the th for the easy 2 star
