No, making the lightning spell obsolete wasn't a purpose of the tesla :rolleyes:
Think about it, a player only gets 5 spells total. Why would anyone ever bring a lightning spell, knowing that a tesla could pop up and put it to waste? 4 teslas, 4 mortars, 4 air defenses, 4 wizard towers........the only buildings worth zapping all have the same number of buildings as there are teslas, meaning a well designed base can make said base effectively lightning-proof, making a great spell (when used right) useless.
In this case, will the hidden Tesla be revealed if lightning spell were case within its range? The intention for hidden tesla is to give surprise to attacker.
