You should have upgradable shovels that the maidens carry around that are used to collect sand which would be put in a new bucket building. The sand could be used as a new resource for buildings and troops.
Make the shovels change with each upgrade.
Level 1 - spoon
Level 2 - spade
Level 3 - shovel
Level 4 - back hoe
Level 5 - (gems only) giant sand shoveling mech named shovellopolis that will also defend village

instead, how about you have a change of digging out gems outta the ground

Dirt to buy troops? What would the troops be called, Dirtman? I don't think this would be a great idea. Maybe if it was possible to dig gems out of the ground, but not as a new resource.

Just a thought - what about purchasable terrain?
We're playing on a 40x40 grid = 1600 little squares.
Just a REAL QUICK glance at my village, I probably have about 600 free squares (VERY ROUGH ESTIMATE).
What if you could purchase say:
100 mud squares - Maybe 50% reduction to movement speed from ground troops
100 sand squares - Maybe 25% reduction to movement speed from ground troops
100 tall grass squares - Maybe 10% reduction to movement speed from ground troops
100 tall pine trees? - Maybe reduce air troops movement speed 25%?
That's just off the top of my head. I don't think I'd draw actual pine trees, maybe on your own village a pine tree symbol, but these would be hidden from attackers, they wouldn't know what they were over/on top of until the attack?
Kind of extreme, and full of flaws, but I've seen a lot of ideas for permanent traps, slowing down troops, etc.

Also, sandman as a hero. He's more of a hero than i troop, i would think
the sand man looks like super man only made out of sand with yellow and red as the colors
like maybe you culd get it at TH 6 so you culd trade it in a caravan to TH 9 poeple in you clan since they wuld need it and you wouldn't and then they could trade you for gold and elixer since you need it in you village at TH 6 and not dirt sinse you can't unlock dark sand troops till like TH 12 or they would be way OP and so dirt serves you no use just like punctuation and spelling and stuf.

Yeah! Summer is here now! So mine as well make sandcastles and also we can send our troops to school so they can be smarter and know how to attack right. Also we can collect water off the beach and have Waterman and we can have a water resource and you mix them and you get a mud to put on your ground to slow enemies down and also maybe your troops can go swimming in the water and have a good time. Also add a portal you can buy for like 1M of every resources. and so it will be 4m resources and then you can use that and take your troops to different game and then you can be running in Subway Surfers using a goblin or something, and then you can have your archer help you compose a tweet maybe roll your katamari? Maybe even sing you some tunes while your going for a run? That can be really cool. Also we can go beyond this! We can have them replace Siri. Also have them be able to be 3D printed and come be our friend in real life and help us with work! That would be so siiiiiiiiick. Maybe also we can have our troops get married and have a family and make more troops and have baby troops that can get upgraded into regular troops! Maybe we can marry that girl in the village the gives you all the notifications and she can be your village wife and your the chief and you guys can make more baby troops in the town hall that grow up into builders so you can have a maximum of instead of 5 builders! how about 10! OR 50!!! maybe 500!!!!! that would be super awesome! LETS DO THIS NOW!!
