DE is easier to come by at TH8, so don't go and blow a bunch of gems on him. I upgraded my TH7 a couple weeks ago and BK is already level 9.

It is easier at th8 because with lvl5 troops you can raid the strong th8s or th9s that have more dark elixir very easy.
On the other Hand the king is very useful for farming the elixir for the lvl5 Upgrades, because you have a strong troop more that does not cost elixir.
With the second account I got the king at th7 and farming it was not so hard, if you have done 2K raids with giant/archer already than it can be done very easy. If you this is your first account and you are not such a good attacker than maybe you should wait until th8, not for the drill, but for stronger troops and better defense to defend your dark elixir.
I got my barb king to level 5 from just this week( 1 gem spell factory helped alot but was just a bonus). And tomorrow when my lab finishes it's research I will start the upgrade for hog's. Currently sitting on 18k de with just over 2k in CC. Its not hard to get with a barch army and 12 wallbreakers. Once you have the barb king it gets easier as he is great at absorbing damage. Just make sure you direct him the correct way with wall breakers.
