Damn, I do both zapping and barching. What will happen to my soul? :p
Barching a dead base harms no one, and you can defend against it if you are active, while there is nothing to be done about lightning spells to DE storage. So in other words, one is unstoppable, the other is not. I do Barch, and I don't zap.
Did we really need another thread on this issue? Its not even a decent thread. No well thought out argument.
If you remove zapping as an effective means to get DE, the following should happen:
TH7 gains level 1 DE Drill (possibly upgradable to level 3)
TH8 gains ability to upgrade to level 6 DE drill
Overall, this will increase the amount of DE available to the general economy, and reduce the need to zap in general. Mostly it's because TH7 needs a fair amount of DE, but has effectively zero ways to acquire it. TH8 also has a pretty high DE requirement, and not much in the way of acquiring it either, AND if they ever sit on a decent stock pile, they get steam rolled by TH9.
By the time you get to TH9, it's much easier to get DE. I'm a pretty recent TH9, and I've been able to almost immediately get my AQ built and upgraded to level 4, only with incidental DE, a level 6 and 4 drill, and free builder time (trying to focus exclusively on big elixer raids to finish elixer buildings ASAP).

Bigger question is why barching a de storage of a active player doing less then 40% damage is no problem, when zapping is an issue? When I go farming for de I really focus on de aiming for de storage and drills. I have even stopped the raid as soon as I have gotten those to limit damage to my heroes regardless if the target has gotten a shield or not.
The entire economy is based off inactive bases. If we weren't allowed to raid them then how are we supposed to get our upgrades done?
My favourite farming strategy is Barch n Zap! Does that make me a bad player? :(
Who cares about zapping, it is annoying but it happens.
I zapped 2k off someone the other day, I knew he would try n revenge. I lost 3k lol, I just shrugged and thought well it serves me right hahaha
There is a way to defend against people barching your collectors. You log on and collect them.
If it bothers you that somebody is barching your drills or raiding your de storage with troops, you have the option to move them closer to the interior of your base, or put more defenses/traps close to them. If you can't protect them against invading armies, you can at least upgrade your defenses so you can in the future.
I don't mind people zapping me. You don't get much DE unless you have over 1k available DE to raiders.
if you attack a dead base, the people won't be mad because thats what they get for going offline for too long.
de zapping on the other hand, takes 3 clicks and they can steal like 500 of your de in about 2 seconds
I Rarely Find Collector Bases Now Maybe Its Just That Im Town hall 10 :(
The OP must be a TH4 or so enjoying the easy loot, he doesn't realized how hard the loot is.
I don't think anybody ever claimed that barching dead bases requires skill.
I would give any th 10 a medal if they could steamroll my th 9 base with any normal farming army. th 9 vs th 8 is more uneven but compared to using lightning on a de storage...not to mention th 8s can be prevent too much loot loss if the attacker is mediocre (as the majority are).
@OP: If you think about it for about 5 seconds you will find the differences between DE zapping and barching a collector base and realize there is a reason why one might complain about de zapping but not the other.
Here's how it works. If there is a troop or tactic that I use, it needs to be buffed, and if there is a troop used on me that I don't use or a tactic used on me that I don't employ, then it's underhanded and needs to be removed from the game.
Zapping, why is it such a big deal? I get zapped sometimes and sometimes I zap others. It's a part of the game and just like any other part of the game I like or dislike I work around it. Yeah does it suck getting zapped for a few thousand DE when I log off, sure it does but it's just like any other part of the game. So someone got you for some DE, revenge them and get it back plus more. Or smash the next base you see that has a ton of DE. Don't see what the big deal is.
DE zapping is not worth it IMO. But that's just me. Whilst you can only get max 1.8k off "Zapping" with 5 spells. I'm only using zero to two spells to get 4k+ on average.
