Upgrade hogs or GoWiPe troops for clan wars?

Sorry for the long post, I didn't realise it :o

I am a relatively new TH8 and Clan Wars are what I like the most in this game. So I got my Dragons up to lvl 3 after my barch upgrade was done, and right now I am upgrading Giants as they help a lot in DE collection.

I am wondering if I should upgrade my Hogs or upgrade my GoWiPe troops. Here are some of my troop levels:

BK - lvl 5
Hogs - lvl 2
Golems - lvl 1
Wizards - lvl 4
Pekka - not yet unlocked
All spells lvl 4

Why is this even a question, you might be wondering? It is basically I am sick of the take it all or lose it all nature of Hogs. I don't want a 97% 1 star, I would rather take a 51% 2 star. I am not claiming to be an expert hogger, but hogs really seem fragile right now. Are lvl 3 or 4 Hogs really a step up or will it stay the same?

I know dragons are great for getting easy 2 stars and possible 3 stars vs TH8 if done right. I always make at least one mass Dragon attack in war and it is usually 3 stars. But I do not really want to be a one trick pony. Besides, even 3 ADs can be a bit scary sometimes, so I am reasonably sure that TH9 will make 3 star dragon attacks improbable.

Yes, GoWiPe will take time to upgrade, but doesn't that mean that I should start down this path now so I can use it earlier? Or should I go for the short term gain and get the hog upgrade?

Also, will lvl 1 Golems work against TH8? Lvl 1 Pekkas? I will be attacking mid-early TH8 for the next month.

Plus, I have another reason for wanting the GoWiPe upgrade. I think I will have a lot of free time in December, and I am thinking of pushing for Champions then as a maxed out TH8. It would be good to have a high level GoWiPe and experience using it when I want to use them near the 3000 trophy range.

I think you should get your wizards to level 5 and then do your PEKKAs. You don't need to worry much about your golems. You shouldn't have any problems with level 1 golems at TH8. I would probably upgrade the spells before hogs or golems, but I don't think your upgrade order will matter much after the PEKKAs.

Eventually you're going to want to max all your troops. So the real questions is what order do you max in order to best suit your current needs. Hogs are somewhat viable even vs th9 and th10 but you'd need them to be maxed.

Your best bet right now, in my opinion, is attack with dragons in clan wars while slowly starting to unlock and upgrade your GOWIPE troops. It will be quite a lot of time of upgrading so dragons should hold you over in the meanwhile. Keep that lab busy!

Just for the heck of it, I've included a strategy video I put out that focuses on using giants versus Golems that may help out until you get them leveled up. Obviously not the exact strategy but similar variation suiting your troop and town hall level might work while starting out.

I'm a maxed TH 8, with ~105 level 8 walls and the rest level 7, and I've never used hogs - mine are still level 1; and with every new update I look at them and go "meh". Anti hog bases are everywhere, and hogs aren't nearly as good as they were a few months ago. Don't get me wrong, they are still great, but as a TH 8 I can 2 star TH 9's with GoWiPe. My Golems are l1, wizards l5, pekkas l3, wallbreakers l4, and BK level 10. I'd say use dragons for now, and work on your GoWiPe troops. I guarantee it'll make wars twice as fun, and you'll be surprised what you can do to a higher level TH 9.

Ok, so it seems pretty clear that those who have replied favour GoWiPe upgrades over Hogs. I guess that makes sense given that I already have lvl 3 Dragons and so Hogs are just an additional option currently.

So my plan is:

- Unlock Pekka now
- Wizard lvl 5
- Pekka to lvl 3 (3 million and 6 million cost!)
- Use DE to upgrade BK to lvl 10
- Then spells or Golem depending on DE

Sounds like a great plan. Just a suggestion - don't use giants in war. At least not until they're level 6, but even then, GoWiPe > GiWiPe anyday.

I have not had the best experience using Giants in war. Only against weak TH7 or against those with exposed ADs did they get me 3 stars. I will take Dragons and Hogs over them. I am upgrading Giants just to make getting to DE storages easier. Otherwise it will be Golems all the way for me. But it still nice to know about the GiWiWi just in case of crunch or as a fun thing to try later.

In general I would say GoWiPe is a more reliable 2-star attack (capable of doing this on bases that are stronger than your own) but hogs are better at getting the 3-star (but you need some experience to see where this is possible and it is always possible to fail spectacularly).

Part of this is because GoWiPe is less susceptible to traps. Golems are more or less trap-proof, so you can easily plan a beeline for TH and execute it well most times. But if you are attacking a base that has been attacked before in CW, hogs can be very powerful once you know the locations of traps.

You should do wiz to 5 first definitely - useful for any kind of attack, donations, farm, etc.

GoWiPe depends quite a lot on wiz, and even more so on high level heroes, for its damage. Don't expect miracles with lvl 5 BK, level 4 wiz and lvl 1 pekkas. For GoWiPe, if you have clanmates who can donate max pekkas, it can make a bigger difference compared to hog attacks.

If your clan accepts 2 stars as a win and you guys are happy losing wars then gowipe.

If your clan thinks 2 stars is a fail and they only go for 3 stars then hogs.
