Depends on the base you want to attack, if you are familiar with GoWiPe, definitely try to max out your troops and go for it, almost guaranteed 3* if you know what you are doing. Same goes for hogs if the base is not a anti-hog base.
I'd advice to go with GoWiPe, as that will be your main attack composition later on in the game.
Hope this helped you!
Same answer with above me, i prefer used Gowipe than Hog at clan wars, but it depends in our enemy base. :)
Tight base with many compartments Hogs; spread base with fewer compartments GoWiPe.
I would say GoWiPe just because hogs are harder to use now, so it is a more risky attack strategy.
Not really... you just need to find the right bases. My handy work last night:

okay many thanks to all of you, i think i go for upgrading my units to have GoWiPe strategy having heard from you....
and btw millions of thanks to kruzkal, that was a nice attack mate ;) i think ill be attacking like that when ive reached TH9 :D
As a TH8 I either used Lvl3 Drag attk, mixed with Loons or Hogs to snipe out AD's, sometimes 3 Lightnings, or a mix of Rage and Heal. Otherwise I used mass Hog (lvl4) with 3 Heals. Never used Gowipe in wars for TH8 and think that the Hogs or Drags are easier to field a 3 star army. But as a previous poster wrote you'll be going into Gowipe or Gowiwi later on and it is smart to get ahead of those upgrades earlier. I never got my Golems to 2 at TH8 because of the difficulty of keeping anything over 20k DE and figured that TH9 and 10 we're better suited for large DE storage amounts. I dunno about the Hog 'nerf' or whatever but they've been good by me and i'm still 3 starring early/mid TH9's with them.
At TH8 I'd never use an army consistency that requires 500+ DE. Better to save that DE for upgrading BK, cause at TH9 You'd want to get that AQ ASAP and get her to lvl 5 as well. Mass drag (lvl3) or mass hog (lvl 3-4 (although also very expenive)) is usually enough to conquer those 3 stars in CW.
Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT upgrade golem at TH8 ! You really don't want to be using them at TH8 as they're big DE swallowers.
Yup. I have to admit I used some gems to top off my DE where I couldn't play though the night getting enough, knowing i'd be raided for 1.5k or w/e. I boosted my drill constantly when I was focusing on Hogs and King to 10. Well he only got to 9 because it's such a hard job to get and keep the DE for TH8 and I didn't want to spend more gems. I have a job and this is my hobby so I buy some gems but don't attempt to rely on them and realizing at a good TH9 i'll be able to do DE upgrades much easier.
A few strategies that I realized as I was working on farming a lot of DE would be to have your defenses done or not on upgrade, fill your CC with wizards/archers/witch to defend your loot when you are off line, boost your (level3) drill to help stack DE, Climb to Crystal (even at 1800 I find a lot of AFK TH10's with 2-3k DE that's easy to grab), and lastly you don't need level 4 Hogs to sac any TH8.
I'd go to level 3 Hogs and have your King to at least 5 and with the right insight/foresight and strategy you can 3 star any TH8. Anti-Hog bases only beat you for a lack of experience. Watching for Tesla's to pop up in an expected big bomb spot and appropriately dropping a heal before they jump to that position if a Tesla doesn't pop up, locating potential double big bomb spots and doing a split deploy of your hogs to mitigate their damage intake, deploy King and/or Barbs to scout for big bombs where you want to deploy your pigs (IMO their King can't make or break a Hog raid, he might effect the overall to some degree but he won't make the attack fail, likely it's something to do with your overall strategy) and always ALWAYS successfully pull and kill their CC before you deploy the hogs.
One time I was up against a Anti-Hog base and I pulled the CC just fine set my wizards to take them out and deployed my Pigs just before the last couple of wizards we're killed... My pig deployment was just close enough to pull a wizard from the group and he followed my pigs into the base, that combined with well placed spring traps and King, killed my attack. That wizard took out 6 hogs or more and i'd have 3 starred that base if it wasn't for that one wizard.
My army at 200capacity, 37 hogs (5 in CC), 9 Wizards, 4 Barbies and Lvl 9 King with 3 Lvl 5 Heals. I am going to switch it up to 8 Wizards 8 Barbies, more Barbs so I can pull the cc in a tighter group and take them out with 1-3 Wizards.
At 220 i'm going to add 4 more hogs.
The problem is when you hit TH9 you have all the TH9 lvl troops to upgrade that you will take a very long time to get round to it. For this reason all the mid-late TH8s in my clan have migrated from Dragons and Hogs to leveling/practising GoWiPe (technically GoWiWiPe with a pair of Witches in CC) in preparation for TH9. We want to minimise the period of time any member of our clan not being able to 3* their equivalent TH opponent.
Try a pair of Witches and a Barb in your CC. Drop a few Barbs as cover, drop Witches, then drop a few Wizards all in the same spot. This will kill any CC and in TH9 able to distract the AQ which is your next major concern for the Hog Rider attack strategy. You will find the endless skeletons are much better at clean up as they will trigger bombs and traps without incurring casualties.
