I was able to plan the first few levels around clan war times but now I just cannot upgrade them since I'll have a disadvantage..

Not like! Sorry! Supercell is a company, i not blame them for making money! Clanwars exists because the comunity wants, but the bonus is ridicolus, (sorry for my bad englisch). Please an example, who plays clanwars if here are no bonus from supercell? Do someone realy think supercell give someone something for free?
My age is 47, im not a child anymore maybe immature... but from ignorant and selfish supercell can not pays the server to keep the game online...
Everyone should see both sides but i agree with many peoples here, sometimes goes supercell to far... Otherwise look around, here are many clones, more expensive free play, and none works better than clash of clans...

I do get what you are saying but I am pretty sure Supercell is faaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrr away from not being able to keep their servers online lol
