Speeding progress & cosmetic changes are a good place for IAP.
Core gameplay is a bad place for IAP.
Phil, I get that you don't see War as core & If that's how you see it then fine.
But what this thread must tell you is that lots of players do see war as the absolute core of the game.
There's a way of thinking that states " Unhappy customers don't matter if the bottom line remains unaffected ". I disagree with this thinking, unhappy customers are often a problem that has not yet happened.
It's not a question of greed but of the balance between playability & profit. From my viewpoint, as a player, the balance looks wrong.
