Your hero is still available as DEFEND.. you want spells? dont upgrade your spell factory before war..
the point is, when your hero returns it will be STRONGER, if you dont want them STRONGER, DONT UPGRADE THEM

It really the length of time that is annoying with heroes. Spell factory has a total upgrade time of 17 days that are lost. Heroes have a total of 227 days each. Assuming you are a constant war clan that is over 100 wars without heroes if you can keep them both upgrading or 200 wars without 1 hero by doing them 1 at a time.
