its annoying when u fail an attack in clan wars because you dont have your archer queen or barb king
maybe dont upgrade your hero at this time then. have you READ all these posts? supercell said they will not be doing it.
I for one am not signing, wasting my time by adding another post that will be ignored by all. which probably counts as a sign in the end..
Your hero is still available as DEFEND.. you want spells? dont upgrade your spell factory before war..
the point is, when your hero returns it will be STRONGER, if you dont want them STRONGER, DONT UPGRADE THEM

Well, considering they are factored into war matchmaking, they should be available. That's like 2 armies fighting, but one has no ammo for their guns.
It's hard not to upgrade your hero during war time unless you're a one war a week clan. Otherwise you have to sit out. They're there like anything else in this game, to be upgraded and improved. People don't do that because of not having them when needed, those that do and like war, have much less fun, by either crippled attacks, or not warring.
The spell lab thing? That's clearly a gem trap anyways that I find really unfair to people. Spells are vital to the majority of attacks, in and out of war, they shouldn't be unavailable while upgrading. SC knows many like their spells, so will gem the spell factory done.

Thankfully I don't have to worry about this for a little while until I upgrade to TH9 (my BK is maxed at lvl 10 currently).
I really think the main issue is that the heroes have so many upgrades and at TH9, a lot of people constantly upgrade their heroes, since it takes months to max them out. 5 days an upgrade could mean not having them for about 2-3 wars. That can really make a huge difference.
It just doesn't balance out to let heroes be available to defend while upgrading, but not to attack. Heroes make or break an attack. Why should they have the ability to break our attacks, while upgrading, when we don't have the ability to make our attacks while upgrading?
I think the spell factory is fine as is. There are relatively few upgrades for it, so it's not a huge deal.
