At TH6 is it best to leave your TH unprotected and just focus on protecting your gold/elixir and trying to max? When I look at popular TH6 base designs they seem to do this.

If you don't care about trophies - it's probably your best option. Th6s get steam-rolled by Th7s, so having a nice protective shield can help out.
I suggest farming aka leaving your th outside. When I was a TH 7 I would destroy any TH 6 with a lot of resources, but having your TH outside helps. Farming is a major part of the game TH 6+ I farmed my way through TH 6 and 7 and now probably 8, until I Max and then im gonna trophy push to Masters

Its very important to always protect your loot as a low town hall level. Farming is amazing as a low town hall and can help you a lot. Your base will upgrade much quicker. Here is a town hall 6 farming base that will help protect your loot. Don't worry about trophies.
