One stupid misplaced quotation mark could cause a bug like this... programmers aren't ignorant of that fact.
I am still having the problem - I'm not advertising and my shop is cleared in seconds. Here is what I observed:
- I don't think this is a bot. Before I place something that I believe is going to be snatched, I put a hungry tree right next to my stall. Often, I get lucky; I place one unadvertised expansion item, it is gone within three seconds, and the buyer tapped the tree on the way out. So, I can now see quite a few people in Last Helpers that have 'raided' my shop. I have no idea who they are. Never heard of them.
- Two days ago I filled my stalls with corn at 10/25g. I carefully did not advertise. Within three seconds, they were gone. About 15 stacks! I had 400 corn so I just kept filling the crates, still not advertising. Finally, a couple of minutes later, the deluge stopped, and I was left with an entire stall of corn. I waited a few minutes, and then clicked on a random stack to advertise it. And... no one came. That stack was allegedly on sale for 30 minutes, and no one bought a single thing from my stall! I had to freaking wait until 30 minutes passed, at which point I advertised a different stack, and they were all gone within a minute. This makes me think that YES ADS ARE BEING PLACED IN THE PAPER WITHOUT US ASKING.
- I tried the same experiment yesterday, but this time with something a bit more expensive; sugarcane at 10/119g. Same exact thing happened. A deluge of gingerbread men cleaned me out without advertising. I refilled as it was happening. Finally, it stopped, and I chose a stack to advertise. The ticker started counting down from 30 minutes... and no one bought any.
- Today, I tried it again. This time with unadvertised hats. I filled my stall with hats at 1/109g. Note this isn't full price (it is 111g). Boom, gone again in 15 seconds. I somehow doubt one single person wanted all those hats.
I'm curious now - does all expansion items, rare items, and anything below full price trigger it? Obviously each item in their database is somehow ranked on its rareness; that's how they make good papers vs. bad paper.
Also, I have some questions for other players that I didn't find the answer to in the FAQ that may be issues because I'm on an iPhone, and connected via GC and not Facebook.
1. People mention that they see avatars of other players that are not their friends or followers. How? I only see pictures of my GC friends. I've never seen an avatar for anyone else, including my followers. How does one toggle if they are playing anonymously or not?
2. There is also a mention of a first and second row in the shop. I only have one row! Are two rows just on iPads?
FINALLY IF ANYONE FROM SUPERCELL IS READING THIS: Do some freaking REGRESSION TESTING for every single thing you change!!! There is NO EXCUSE for not running automated regression testing!!!
