Interesting. I have the exact opposite mindset. Since I actually have control over followers they were there at my discretion to benefit from the sales I had until I felt they abused the privilege (usually by "raiding"). I've never felt like I owed them anything. I play the game for myself and they're free to follow someone else any time they feel dissatisfied.

Exactly. Only once did one of my followers help with a boat crate. Not that I expect help from followers, I'm just agreeing with the assertion they're not following me because they like me or my farm, but because I have something they want. I don't see anything 'honorable' about that, it's self-serving.

absolutely absolutely agree, which is why im not sorry for using the word "despise", cuz like you said theres nothing honorable about the whole following thing and i also happen to think it brings out the ugliness of human beings, which in this case, THEM. i've seen plenty of people who dont collect the money when they sell expansion materials just to gain more followers. i followed someone just to see how long those sold bems were going to stay at their shop and wow it was a good whole 3 weeks or more while all the time they were putting up boring things like eggs, bacon and wool to attract people to follow their farm. i think its a deceitful thing to do, and funny thing was the followers increased steadily and not many seemed to actually leave even though they never got to buy any bems after all these while. so now i not only think followers are greedy but they're stupid as well.

You know, I understand the points being made in this thread -- there are some extreme examples here. And it is interesting to see the different outlooks and ways people play -- but really if you were to take some of the messages from it to heart you'd never play again. I am beginning to feel uncomfortable about flagging a crate or following someone or buying anything. (And I don't think I have trespassed or imposed in the ways described on here, by the way, but will people think I am imposing, or think I have malicious intent if I just play as normal? I feel paranoid now).

haha, not coming to the forum would do the trick cuz...see no evil! just kidding. honestly, dont feel that way. just play the game as you would since its only a minority of us who thinks this way. we're probably just people who think or analyze too much but you know, thats just us ;D

I consider my followers my clientèle. I assume they follow me because they want my help and support.

Our NH consists mostly of followers of my best friend and of me, so they were able to confirm that they like us because of the way we helped them. Some other followers are able to communicate by changing their farm names. Others are obviously glad to return the favour by watering my plants and filling my crates or by putting out really nice stuff in their RS.

Of course, I have my favorites. :)

One follower got a cream crate filled, then filled a cream crate on my own boat 3 hours later. That was months ago, but I remember it well. Her status as a favorite follower is secure, so I filled a honey popcorn crate on her boat today. Another follower managed to communicate by changing her farm name, got lots of LEMs from me and gave me some bolts, when I needed them.

Other followers get deleted for too enthusiastic shopping. :(

Some followers I just shake my head at their playing style. Lacking several machines and the fishing boat and forever accepting boats of that kind. And buying my crops instead of growing and selling their own. Or flagging empty boats. If a follower flags jam crates and then let the rest of the boat empty, I will not help her again, unless she fills her part of the boat first.:(

You'll know if someone doesn't want you to follow them because they'll delete you.

I've never felt imposed upon to fill someone's boat. Obligated, perhaps, if I bought something from their shop or they helped me in the past, but it's not always feasible to do so.

As for buying things....

"Enthusiastic" is a nice way of putting it. I was going to say greedy. :P

I've had a couple of occasions where followers would consistently buy out all the premium items I listed. They bought more than any one person could possibly need, so I began thinking they were using my farm to supply their neighborhoods. It bothered me because they weren't leaving anything for anybody else. Every time I removed one after a "raid" I'd say to myself, "Hope it was worth it."

That's funny. The only reason I ever follow anyone is so that I can help them.

It works like this. I'm cruising the DD for help flags and find one that's looking for say 3 crates of bread. I almost have enough to fill a crate and I know I will soon. Or maybe it's something like eggs or soybeans that I can easily harvest on my farm.
I follow them so that I can find them again when my bread is ready. The version of the DD that I found them in May be gone but I can find them in my help tab.
Once I have filled the crate or crates I unfollow them.

I used to do that too, back when I still helped strangers in the paper.

I really wished I could talk to my followers. Was SO disappointed when we got NH instead.
