Expect people to attack you, and expect them to win quite often. The trick is to raid others for lots more than you lose, don't let your trophies increase too quickly when you first start raiding, just get the resources and then quit the battle. Whatever you do don't level up your town hall until you are running out of other things to do.
another nice tip you will hear: don't upgrade your town hall before there is nothing else to upgrade :)g

If you are going to buy gems, spend them on the builder huts, in the long run they will help you more often than speeding up a project. If you can afford it, get 5 builders now, through gems of course.
Also, upgrade your base camps and troops so that you can hold more troops. Try to raid easy bases with a lot of loot, don't raid bases with under 10k of each early on and once you hit TH 5 (town hall 5) don't settle for less than 50k each or so. Once you hit TH6 go for 100k+ each or so, so that you get the most out of your troops. You will have to skip a few bases to find the right one but its worth it.
