Customization

A lot of us have maxed out most things. Some have left to play other games, some of us are driven to stick around out of loyalty to our clan. What people want from any game is choices and options. That is what is so great about this game. You can upgrade how you want, build your fortress anyway you like and when you attack, you can use your preferred troops. Why not take it a step further?

Instead of just adding the odd new guy, why not do an easier update giving people choices. A few different CC/TH options just for graphics. A new resource found only in battle and only the probability of it goes up when you get 3 stars attacking a superior ranked enemy. These are not gems but can also be purchased. You use these to customize your heros in anyway you see fit. For example, maybe you want the archer queen to attack instead of with a wide spread shot, one arrow with longer distance and more damage. Much like the xbows themselves. Maybe she can't fight air units in this case. Or be able to make your heroes in charge of other units. Not just barbs getting riled up when a lvl 5 king is around, use a ton of these found gems and he now moves with Wizards.

Or they can go dark? Or your base can be light or dark. Selecting one or the other changes the graphics and gives you certain bonuses towards the side you choose. Slight increase when attacking dark foes, a different look and maybe a marginal increase to the resources. This will spark all new clan divisions but make it so the clans that have a balance of both types have the advantage.

Options. Many of these can be done in a day and the size would be negligible. Others change the scope of the game to some extent (but not a ton). This will encourage people of high level to stay in the high leagues and not have people just put their TH out to get shields. This will also get people to buy resources for their heroes. Unlock different things. Giving people options allows for a whole new level for advanced players to stay interested. Also players that spend a lot of money on the game (admittedly, like me).
