The next update should let you switch gold and elixir amounts. For example, you want to upgrade your mortar which is 1,000,000 gold. You don't have 1,000,000 gold, but you do have 1,000,000 elixir. You should be able to switch the amounts of gold and elixir. I hope that is included in the next update.
