Is there a bonus/discount/advantage to buying elixer or gold with gems as opposed to using gems to pay for an upgrade?
I plan to use gems to speed up a few upgrades I started before my th8 upgrade finishes. But if I decide to pay for upgrades is it better to fill my storage or to may for the upgrade directly?

Truthfully I would save my gems for builder huts
I have 3 I guess I can buy the 4th and still have enough to speed up a few upgrades.
But the question is do I save gems by buying gold and using it to upgrade or just using the button to finish an upgrade? Does it make a difference in the gem to gold exchange rate?

And now I have 4 builders... I can fast forward one upgrade tonight before bed and start upgrading 2 more things. Probably the spell factory so that I can get the next spell unlocked.

Meant that spell factory will be the last upgrade before th8 upgrade finishes. My next upgrade will be my teslas or archers. Already upgrading my primary mortar.

Yes, I farm all day but I want to get a few upgrades completed before my th8 upgrades finishes in 2 days. Already lost to attacks (needed the shield anyway but it cost me 300k gold and 200k elixer!)

Agreed. Taking the two hours or hour just to farm some elixer is way better. Don't waste the gems. You'll be grateful later on. And you'll understand it later on in the gameQuote:

instead of constant skipping build times why dont you invest in a 5th builder? it will be cheaper in the long run. BK level to level 2 is only 12 hours, start him before you go to bed and he will be ready to wreck shop for you tomorrow...
Right now my focus is on upgrading defenses. Upgrading 4 at a time will leave my base incredibly vulnerable.

Don't worry about losing your shield. Youll lose more in loot from not farming than you will from being raided. Get to farming.
Focus on get 5th builder hut and you can do everything you want with gem later thats all my suggest
i push myself to master and get 5th builder and its worth it
so about defense you are th8 so max loot only 250k if you farming 4mil and get robbed 250k
so attacking first
defense is pretty much useless
I am still th7, th8 upgrade finishes in about 2 days.
I am making great progress with upgrades. With the boost to collectors I was able to raise quite a bit while some upgrades finished then had a few very successful raids. I am upgrading my 3rd archer tower, 2nd mortar and my lab right now. My wizard towers are maxed out as are half of my cannons. Will upgrade my 2 remaining cannons as soon as I get my last archer tower upgraded.
The fun part is all of the work upgrading all of the new walls, defenses and army I get when th8 upgrade is finished and starting the next round of upgrades! May get 5th builder for that. But at 2000 gems... maybe not.
