This isnt viable when your armies contain very expensive troops, eg golems, pekka, witches, etc. I actually like this idea.

This is a bad idea for the same reasons HydroPenguin thinks its a good idea.

A fine idea. Good for players wh don't pay attention on elixir expenses
players that don't pay attention to elixir expenses lose loot. This is a good thing because they are more likely to buy gems to make up for the excessive loot loss, which helps supercell develop this game further.
The game already shows you how much you got. If it showed you how much you use, people might change their behaviour. If supercell tole everybody how much gems they use, they would probably use less gems in the future, why wouldn't this apply to elixir? (ok, I'm not making sense here, bear with me)
If you show profit, then you are tell the player how much investment they have been making unconsciously. Players that are conscious already have an alternative, even if it is an inconvenient calculator. I know a rough figure of how much my troop composition costs and just find a base with more loot than that.
