How to use your builders

As everyone may know you can have 5 builders max. The more builders you have the easier it makes to grow and build your village!

Here are the costs of each builder (findable on CoC wiki):

1st builder = FREE
2nd builder= 250 Gems ***
3rd builder = 500 Gems
4th builder = 1000 Gems
5th builder = 2000 Gems


*** = you buy this builder in your Clash of Clans introduction so it's practicully "free"

How to use your builders when you have 2 builders

Some players will think: "Why should I BUY another builder? I only play for free!" Well, first of all this game is very addicted so 99% chance you will buy something. Second, to get an awsome village within 2-3 months you'll need at least 2 builders. Using 1 builder will extremely slow you down.

"How can I buy builders without spending my money?"

The more time you spend in Clash of Clans, the more rewards you get from the girl in your top left corner. She "gives" you tasks you can accomplish wich gives you experience/gems as reward.

There is one pretty easy task to accomplish wich gives you 1250 gems ==> get 1250 trophies
From the 1250 gems you can buy your 2nd AND if you want your 3rd!

"Now lets say you've got 2 builder, how do you use them?"

Always use 1 builder for upgrading your defence and the other one for the other buildings. If your walls are pretty good in compare with other players (with thesame account level/trophies) than use your "defence builder" for buildings such as: Mortars, Wizard towers, Archer towers and Cannons.

How to use your builders when you have 3 builders

So I told you guys how to receive 1250 gems pretty easy (read the subtopic about having 2 builders). If you buy your 2nd and 3rd builder you have 3 builders total.

"1st builder"

Use this builder for the regular buildings like: Lab, Magic factory, camps, barrack(s) and WALLS! If you know you'll raid alot you have to spend your gold into walls. It's always good to upgrade your walls. If you're planning to enlarge your village, use this builder for your lab, magic factory,barracks and camps to upgrade. Calculate smart to know wich building to build.

For example: You're sleeping each night 6-9 hours. If you want to upgrade your mortar wich takes 12 hours, then upgrade it 2 hours before you're going to sleep. (RAID FIRST) While you sleep, it's a high chance you'll get raided and receive 12+ shield. When you're awake you see your nice new mortar and some couple of hours shield left. Use those couple of hours to upgrade your barrack what could take 3 hours.

"2nd builder"

Use this builder for all your defence buildings!

"3rd builder"

Use this builder for you Town Hall bu the most important for your Storages/Resources! Again: We wise on how to use your builders (always take a look at the upgrade time). If you will not upgrade something important for a while, use builder 2 and 3 for your defence.

How to use your builders when you have 4 builders

Most of all players who have 4 builders are pretty experienced Clash of Clans players. To already have Town Hall level 6 or higher and know how to use the builders very well. For those who are extremely addictive and immediatly buy their 2th, 3th and 4th builder:

"1st builder"

Use this builder for your walls ONLY. Upgrading walls is once again extremely important! Because you have 4 builders and upgrade fast wich requires resources, you'll raid alot. Spend the remaining gold into new walls!

"2nd builder"

Use this builder for your camps & barracks

"3rd builder"

Use this builder for your resources/storages

"4th builder"

Use this builder for your defence buildings

Because you've 4 builders you can mix their "tasks".

For example: If you know that you're not going to raid for a while, you can use 3rd & 4th builder to upgrade your defence buildings quickly. AGAIN: look at the upgrade time and be wisely on your choice wich building to upgrade first.

How to use your builders when you have 5 builders

95% of all time, only addicted and VERY high players have 5 builders. It's almost thesame "guide" as when you've 4 builders. Safe 1 builder for walls and be smart on using the other 4 builders.

I believe in using 3 builders for defences and 1 builder for everything else. I upgrade walls in between upgrades since there's usually a day or two in between upgrades (for higher levels).

Thank you, I agree with you every has made their village different. Someone has higher defence than buildings and an other player lower defence and high mines/pumps. Just like I said: think wisely how to use each builder ;)

Good job on the guide. I never really thought about this as I approach builders differently.

I have this thing where I want my builders doing same thing the same time. So say, 4 cannons, 4 builders must only be doing cannons. Something like that. But in TH9, it's gonna be impossible because of the high cost of upgrades. So, this time around, I upgrade whatever my gold allows me to. But this time, I'm focusing on pumps and barracks. Wanna try hoarding with 8 pekkas. :)

Dynamo, my revenge got lost in the pile of list. Couldn't return the favor now. ;)

To progress as fast as possible, the goal should always be to save all gems and use them on buying builders.

If u are not willing to spend any money on gems:
1.You start the game with 500 gems and 1 builder.
2. spend 250 gems to get a second builder. (250 left. dont spend them even if the game wants u to dont do it).
3. by doing some achievments + cleaning up your village you will get gems up to 500 in just a few weeks (2 maybe 3).
4. buy third builder.
5. get 1250 trophies and recieve 450 gems.
6. clean up camps + get some other achievments (another 2-3 months) and save up till 1000 gems.
7. buy fourth builder.
8. fifth builder is almost impossible to get. it costs 2000 gems and u will have to collect those gems by cleaning up your village + some verry high end achievments. this might take up to 6 months.

this will end up having X ammount of building time in the first four months:
3 weeks with just 2 builders = 6 weeks building time
10 weeks with 3 builders = 30 weeks building time
3 weeks with 4 builders = 12 weeks building time.
total building time in first four months = 48 weeks building time.

1. You start the game with 500 gems and 1 builder.
2. spend 250 gems to get a second builder. (250 left. dont spend them even if the game wants u to dont do it).
3. buy third builder with gems immediatly. have 250 gems left.
3. by doing some achievments + cleaning up your village + 1250 trophies you get up to 1000 in around 6 weeks.
4. buy fourth builder.
5. fifth builder is almost impossible to get. it costs 2000 gems and u will have to collect those gems by cleaning up your village + some verry high end achievments. this might take up to 6 months.

this will end up having X ammount of building time in the first four months:
6 weeks with 3 builders = 18 weeks building time
10 weeks with 4 builders = 40 weeks building time
total building time in first four months = 58 weeks building time.

Conclusion: within the first four months your progress is around 20% more.

2 weeks with 3 builders = 6 weeks building time
14 weeks with 4 builders = 56 weeks building time
total building time in first four months = 62. weeks building time.

Conclusion: within the first four months your progress is around 28% more.

3. buy 2500 gems and have 2750 total gems.
4. buy third builder with gems immediatly. have 2250 gems left.
5. buy fourth builder immediatly have 1250 gems left.
5. by doing some achievments + cleaning up your village + 1250 trophy reward you get up to 2000 in 5 weeks.
6. buy fifth builder.

this will end up having X ammount of building time in the first four months:
5 weeks with 4 builders = 20 weeks building time
11 weeks with 5 builders = 55 weeks building time
total building time in first four months = 75. weeks building time.

Conclusion: within the first four months your progress is around 50% more.

spending gems on speeding up buildings is quite inefficient.
1 gem = around 4-8 minutes (4 minets for troops and buildings with short building times. up to 8 mintes per gem for buildings with verry long building times).

2500 gems will give u maximum of 100000-20000 minutes benefit.
20000 minutes = 333 hours = 13 days saved building time. = around one till maximum two weeks saving one builder.

To progress as fast as possible with any ammount of builders:

1. try to get as much as possible loot by raiding.
2. try to always have all builders busy.
3. If u wish to upgrade walls keep 1 builder free as long as u want to upgrade walls. after your done upgrading walls, put this working upgrading something.
4. Choose upgrades wisely depending on gold/elixer available. (5 medium costs upgrades OR 4 low cost + 1 verry high cost upgrade. etc etc.). dont spend all you have on 2 verry expensive upgrades so your other builders have nothing to do.
5. At start put focus on upgrading offence. strong offence = more wins = more loot = more upgrades and builders working.

Long for the good old days when a free builder is not needed for wall upgrades which I think is closer to reality as no matter how skillful a builder is, he simply can't turn wood into stone, steel into gold, and so on. For those you'll need an alchemist. Lol

The game makes you buy the second builder in the tutorial.

The 1250 trophy achievement gives you 450 gems.

I stopped reading after this, as this is enough factual inaccuracy for one guide.

2nd builder is:250 gems 3rd:500 4th:10005th:2000 so all is 3500 gems not including 2nd caus u got the gems already to get it it cost no more than £20 to get the builders so just buy them!

I'm glad to hear about your improvement! Wich level are you currently?

I have four builders so I read that section straight away. You said to always leave one builder free for walls. I stopped reading after that. That is absolutely horrible advice and no one should do that.

Btw 007ich I was one of those who didn't pay money and didn't use gems during tutorial lol. I can say that 3rd builder is easily achievable by level 30 and 4th builder by level 55-60. For the fourth builder you must be willing to clan hop in order to donate 25,000 troops, thus giving 250 gems.

Because you should be upgrading things all the time, you don't want to be able to stay on for hours without needing to log off because you always have a spare builder for walls. By having something upgrading at all times, you can log off when you have max storage and lose what, like 500k gold max. So when your next builder is free, upgrade as many walls as your can, take out trees and bushes, and repeat process of gaining gold while upgrading.

What game are you playing? I've been hit for 150,000-200,000 five times overnight, and it could have been more.

I keep resources low, let people take them, then drop back to zero and load up on gold as a builder frees up, then stop raiding when I have enough for the next upgrade.

First of all, thank you for sharing your opinion.

Well what I'm trying to say thit for example you've 4 builders. Builder 1st is building new town Hall (lets say 4 days), 2nd builder is building mortar upgrade (lets say 2 days), 3rd builder is building barrack (3 days) now you've 1 builder left and gold depot is about 450k and elixer 230k. So you tell me I've to upgrade something for lets say 250k gold, gives me 200k gold and 200k (-30k troops) left and I log out. Players can now steal much more from me BUT when I use my 4th builder to builder walls worth 400k and upgrade something else wordt 150-230k elixer I have 50k gold left and maby about 30k elixer wich will continuely grow because you raid and have mines/pumps.

If you do your "way" you've 4 builders building, keeping storage raising but got nothing on it to use. I hope you understand my way of thinking in here.

Well I just raid no matter my resources amount. I need them whole the time for upgrading my walls and building new defence buildings (upgraded to TH 8) etc. etc.

Whenever a builder gets free, calculate how much gold you will need for the next upgrade and spend the remaining in walls. No point keeping 1 builder free all the time. Try to mix your builders such that you will have 1 spare builder every 12-24 hours. Spreading out the builders is crucial. If you do not leave much in the tank when logging off, you can easily afford to have 2-3 defensive buildings being upgraded. All you will lose is trophies. If your map is well spread out not even that many.

That's true but I noticed that many Town Hall 7 + players have got their buildings pretty well upgraded but their walls not. Because they have a good defense (most likely upgraded troops) and raid alot, they'll have alot gold left when there others builders are building. So keeping 1 builder behind for walls to upgrade is pretty awsome in this case. So it depends on your own situation.

That's like me, I've got a TH8 going on 9 with pretty decent upgraded buildings but half my walls are still level 4..

Umm, as you already stated, you get the 2nd builder in the tutorial and the 3rd only costs 500, you will easily be able to get the 3rd builder once you get this achievement, if not before.

This is a waste of a builder. All of your builders should be busy building with as little down time as possible. They are slave labor, take advantage of it and don't let them take time off, you own their souls! Just upgrade walls as builders free up before you start them on their next build task. You should try to farm up for the next upgrade you are looking to do before the builder frees up. When he does, upgrade your walls with any excess funds and then start building your next unit asap. This is especially good when saving up for an elixir based building, as you should have plenty of golf saved up as well to give you several wall upgrades before you start the building upgrade.

In general, don't keep one builder dedicated to certain types of buildings, upgrade things as they make sense and as you find the resources do it. Some general tips:

Builder Huts: These are the most important building in game. If you are going to spend your gems on anything, spend them on these. I highly recommend spending the $10 to get your 3rd and 4th builders as soon as the game starts. Spending another $20 for the 5th builder is up to you, but it is recommended if you can afford it.

Town Hall: Try to get close to max on most of your buildings and unit upgrades before going to the next level (mines and extractors or the exception).

Army Camps: Upgrade these whenever you can, the more troops you have the more you can raid. And this is the only building that is still usable when being upgraded.

Barracks: Only upgrade one of these at a time, no matter how many you have. The exception is if you are going to be offline until your current upgrading one completes, then go ahead and upgrade another just before you log off. Troop production is important to farming and you don't want to slow it down.

Laboratory: Build this and upgrade whenever possible. You should always have troops upgrading. Farming for your next troop upgrade should almost always be your priority. Focus on the troops that you use the most and then the troops that you donate most. Don't waste time upgrading spells until you have maxed all of your troop upgrades and can't upgrade the Laboratory itself.

Defenses: These are important to keep up, unless you are someone who only farms large amounts when they are online continuously. Try to get most of these to their max level, or as close as you can before doing your next town hall upgrade. Also try to only do only 1 or 2 at a time until you get a better feel for your defenses. You can occasionally do an all builder defense upgrade if you feel you are falling behind defensively, but don't farm much when this happens.

Walls: These are important as well. Every time you have a builder coming available, try to save up a little extra gold than you need for your next upgrade to upgrade a few walls before doing your next upgrade. Don't let it affect your builder down time much though.

Mines/Extractors: You can upgrade these occasionally, but don't waste too much builder time on this. Once they get beyond a day, they really aren't worth it. You are going to get the vast majority of your resources from battling other players.

Clan Castle: Join a clan as soon as you are able to build this. Clan troops help attack and defend. Upgrade this as soon as you can as well. The more troops you can hold, the more your clanmates can help you. And please donate back as well as request!

Storage Units: These are fairly cheap to upgrade all the way to max. Anticipate your future needs and keep these upgraded ahead of the curve. There is nothing more frustrating than having 1.5 mil elixir storage maxed and wanting to do that 2 mil elixir upgrade and having to wait for the storage upgrade to complete.

Spell Factory: Spells may be cool, but in general are counter productive to farming. Why spend $20-50k on a spell to help you win $100k? Very counter productive. Almost any opponent you can beat with a spell, you can also beat without the spell, just attack smarter.

One Time Use Defenses: DO NOT BUY GIANT BOMBS, they are a waste of money. Use that money on building or wall upgrades. Spring Traps and Bombs (the small ones) are cost effective at defending, so place these wisely. Personally, I don't find the small bombs do enough damage to make them worthwhile at higher levels, but the spring traps aren't level dependent and are great for choke points.

I wasn't intending on writing all of this, but wanted to set straight some of the poor advice from the OP. No disrespect to the OP, he was giving his opinion and trying to help, but I don't want others misled by some of his faulty logic.

Umm, as you already stated, you get the 2nd builder in the tutorial and the 3rd only costs 500, you will easily be able to get the 3rd builder once you get this achievement, if not before.


This is a waste of a builder. All of your builders should be busy building with as little down time as possible. They are slave labor, take advantage of it and don't let them take time off, you own their souls! Just upgrade walls as builders free up before you start them on their next build task. You should try to farm up for the next upgrade you are looking to do before the builder frees up. When he does, upgrade your walls with any excess funds and then start building your next unit asap. This is especially good when saving up for an elixir based building, as you should have plenty of golf saved up as well to give you several wall upgrades before you start the building upgrade.

In general, don't keep one builder dedicated to certain types of buildings, upgrade things as they make sense and as you find the resources do it. Some general tips:

Builder Huts: These are the most important building in game. If you are going to spend your gems on anything, spend them on these. I highly recommend spending the $10 to get your 3rd and 4th builders as soon as the game starts. Spending another $20 for the 5th builder is up to you, but it is recommended if you can afford it.

Town Hall: Try to get close to max on most of your buildings and unit upgrades before going to the next level (mines and extractors or the exception).

Army Camps: Upgrade these whenever you can, the more troops you have the more you can raid. And this is the only building that is still usable when being upgraded.

Barracks: Only upgrade one of these at a time, no matter how many you have. The exception is if you are going to be offline until your current upgrading one completes, then go ahead and upgrade another just before you log off. Troop production is important to farming and you don't want to slow it down.

Laboratory: Build this and upgrade whenever possible. You should always have troops upgrading. Farming for your next troop upgrade should almost always be your priority. Focus on the troops that you use the most and then the troops that you donate most. Don't waste time upgrading spells until you have maxed all of your troop upgrades and can't upgrade the Laboratory itself.

Defenses: These are important to keep up, unless you are someone who only farms large amounts when they are online continuously. Try to get most of these to their max level, or as close as you can before doing your next town hall upgrade. Also try to only do only 1 or 2 at a time until you get a better feel for your defenses. You can occasionally do an all builder defense upgrade if you feel you are falling behind defensively, but don't farm much when this happens.

Walls: These are important as well. Every time you have a builder coming available, try to save up a little extra gold than you need for your next upgrade to upgrade a few walls before doing your next upgrade. Don't let it affect your builder down time much though.

Mines/Extractors: You can upgrade these occasionally, but don't waste too much builder time on this. Once they get beyond a day, they really aren't worth it. You are going to get the vast majority of your resources from battling other players.

Clan Castle: Join a clan as soon as you are able to build this. Clan troops help attack and defend. Upgrade this as soon as you can as well. The more troops you can hold, the more your clanmates can help you. And please donate back as well as request!

Storage Units: These are fairly cheap to upgrade all the way to max. Anticipate your future needs and keep these upgraded ahead of the curve. There is nothing more frustrating than having 1.5 mil elixir storage maxed and wanting to do that 2 mil elixir upgrade and having to wait for the storage upgrade to complete.

Spell Factory: Spells may be cool, but in general are counter productive to farming. Why spend $20-50k on a spell to help you win $100k? Very counter productive. Almost any opponent you can beat with a spell, you can also beat without the spell, just attack smarter.

Great post, but i felt some of the advise given was a bit misleading. However, the above reply is exactly what i would of done too.

I don't want to step on any1 toes, but keeping a single builder dedicated to walls would be wasteful. Walls and clean up as discussed can and should be done between upgrades. Also there was previous post that said he gets attacked 4-5 times a night resulting in huge resource lost each time. I think if that is truly the case, you gotta move ur storage inside the walls and not right in the corner with no defences. I jst dont understand how would u lose so much first time round and your shield didnt come up???

I messed up with my gems after the tutorial, and i am right now in the process of hunting for the 1250 trophies. Thing is, my town hall is currently being upgraded into lvl 5, and i am having a hard time getting tophies past 900+. Shall i just concentrate with 2 builders for the moment? (not considering buying gems at the appstore)

Euhm.. When I upgraded my Town Hall to level 5 I realized I needed more builders but it's your own choice.

I honestly don't think I could survive with less then 4 builders, it's hard enough as it is with 5 :p

It isn't about the fact it's correct or not, it's usefull or not. What I'm sharing is my oppinion and I said in an earlier post that the usage of your builders are diffent.. it depends on your situation. What I tried to sell is a way to use builders 24/7. If you're raiding and all of your builders, your resorces can be raided. That's useless and a waste of time!

I definitely agree with you that some things could be better but it's an aversge guide to use your builders. Each one of you uses their builders differently. At the end we'll all be maxed so dafuq!

If have been playing since august 2014 and i still only have 2 builders
i dont use Real money for coc and use my free gems for boosting when farming.
i admid it takes time when you only got 2 builders but whatever.
