The shield is not meant for you to recover everything you lost from a lost defensive raid.
That's a ridiculous assumption. What's the point of being raided if there's no real loss?
You expect to be able to recoup all of your lost resources from a lost raid by simply..... not playing for 12-16 hours?
That's.... not farming.
Farming is going out and "Harvesting" the crops. Crops being your loot. Farming is not sitting around for your resource collectors to fill up and empty into your storages.
