I just got my dragons to lv 3 and wanted to give them a go. Overnight I cooked this army comp:
5 lv 3 Dragons
50 lv 3 Minions
3 Lv 4 Rage Spells
I have never used Minions and Dragons together before... so could someone please explain how I should use this army composition effectively?
no because they do the same thing, try dragloonion or loonion.
Drop some minions to clear the outer buildings and then drop your dragons to go for the core. Use the rest of your minions to back them up as they tank defensive fire.

Drags and Mins are a good TH8 and below strategy...but your composition is too minion heavy.
I have used 20 minions and the rest dragons. Minions were used solely for clearing outside buildings which allows dragons to get to air defenses quicker.
Dragons and minions could work if the outer buildings are too spread out and defensive buildings can't reach your minions. Drop minions to destroy outer buildings as many as you can then drop the dragons. This way the dragons will directly head to the center and won't get distracted. The number will vary depend on the base, but you want to have as many dragons as you can (7-9 dragons). I don't think 5 dragons can survive when they are being targeted by decent level defensive buildings. If the opponent base require too many minions to clear the outer buildings, you might need to consider another army combination.

So i used a drag-minion comp in my clan war and i usually 2-3 starred.
I used 8 lvl3 drags, and 30 lvl 3 minions.
Used 4 lvl 5 rage,
use minions to draw out cc, than wipe out excess buildings on the outside so that your drags don't go away from the center.

The reason I use Dragon-Minion (or Dragion) is because it trains faster than 10 Dragons. I use 8 drags (2 in each barrack) and 20 minions - so it trains in 1 hour instead of 1 1/2 hours. Use the minions to clear the corners on each end of the side you'll attack from, and take out any TH snipes, huts in the far corners of the map, etc; then drop the dragons in a line and rage them over Air Defenses. Use the remaining Minions, your Heroes, and your CC troops to surround the base by dropping them on another side of the base.
