I've done all my essential upgrades, all tier 1 troops to L5. After I finish L5 lightning, should I get the minions? I don't really want my king to be sleeping more often, and it also takes a builder for his upgrades.

Neglecting the BK in his infancy is a fatal mistake.
Minions are the idea DE farming troop, quick to train and cheap.

I would suggest the barbarian king too, but I'm just not a fan of minions.
Probably BK, I have him at level 5 and don't plan to upgrade him any more for a while (due to regen times)
I do also have level 2 minions but I never use them...
I like them both. Personally will go with Bk, mine will be going to sleep soon for his lvl9 upgrade. The longer sleeping time doesn't really bother me much, the increased health and offense really compensates for that. But I do miss him when he's upgrading now that they take over 3 days.
Rule one: Always keep the lab light on.
We can have 5 builders but only one lab.
Rule two: Always keep all builders busy, they need jobs.
Rule three: Have fun
Anyway, the better question is if your not upgrading minions, what is your lab researching?
Always upgrade what you use the most first.
Having spent a lot of time with the minions in the past few days I would vote for the bk. I've found the minions to be a bit underpowered compared to their housing space.
