I'm a new th9 coming off a maxed town hall 8 and the lab is getting ready to finish upgrading so I'm wondering what troops I should upgrade first. What are the pros and cons to each strategy? What trophy range do you stay at? I also want that precious dark elixir so please keep that in mind. Thanks!
AFAIK, Balloonion = less gold, more DE @ crystal.
If you prioritize DE over the other resources, go to crystal and upgrade dem balloons! If you plan on getting gold and dark elixir, i would do giants and high gold 1/crystal. Just my opinion, others may say balloons anyway because they are good at actually breaking into bases consistently.

I am also a TH9 and use Loonion occasionally for war attacks but NEVER for farming DE or any other resource for that matter. For town halls 7&8 I used Barch and BAM which worked well for gold farming. However as you reach TH9 there is an emphasis on dark elixir farming and so I began testing army compositions for efficiency and effectiveness as well as trophy ranges to stay at. IMO the most efficient is 16 giants, 84 archers, 40 goblins, and 8 wall breakers with healing spells. What makes this army superior to Loonion for DE farming is the train time. I farm with this army in Crystal 3 and gain on average 30k Dark Elixir per 2 hour boost session. You can make around 19-28 attacks depending on whether or not you use your full army per attack. If the DE is in the storage, It will be necessary to use all of your troops. If the DE is in the pumps, you only need to use your giants & archers. Attack bases with 1.1-1.6k DE available and you will have no problem hitting 30k in 2 hours. Loonion is a much stronger army, but you can only make 7-8 attacks max in a boosting session, which means to earn as much as I do with giants, you have make 3.8-4.3k DE per raid. Keep in mind it also costs 300 DE for minions ;). So my advice, upgrade giants first dude! The above army comp is also great for gold farming in Gold II. Efficient, effective, and versatile! What more could you want from a farming army comp?

Balloonion farming is definetly something I want to get into later down the rode when my elixir upgrades are done and I don't have to worry about it as much. But I wasn't aware that it takes the same amount of time for a giant army? Will definetly keep that in mind! Thanks!Quote:

TL,DR - Minions chew DE
I met a person who only uses loons to farm. He had 2.2m HH I had 2.4m HH at the time so 200k more DE looted then him. He was up in C3-1 most the time, me I stick to g2-c3 using a Gaint DE diving build or Barch BAM and take any easy DE.
The difference was I had max DE troops and 20/20 heroes. He had hogs and witches + 15BK/12AQ.
So loon army takes around 40 min mark, mine takes 26mins.
I make about 1-1.5K per raid(2-3k per hr) when focusing on DE diving, 500-1k(1.5 - 3 phr) when Barch/BAM. He tries to get 2-3k(2.5-3.5 phr) per raid but minus 700DE its about 1.4-2.6k.

And th8s will usually offer up to 270k gold from storages, so go for it if you find one. The only one issue I came across was that once i used my whole army and I didn't really want to wait for it to rebuild so I attacked with the bare minimum I thought I needed, resulting in some disappointing raids. Also, it's better to train your army over night so you have all your spells and troops ready in the morning (basically means 0 wait time in the morning for a 48 minute build).
In the end your army composition would be:
24 loons (20 loons for 200 camp space)
50 minons
1 lightning (CC troops can be hard to take care of with minions)
1 heal (heal minions if under attack by a wizard tower or heal loons if they need it)
2 rage (to help loons penetrate into base before being shot down)

I don't really bother with lightnings tbh. CC troops (except for flyers like drags) have a very easy way to deal with them, and in general when balloonion you should do this:
Prior to attacking full stop, drop a couple minions in likely places an air bomb might be. Using same method, try to lure CC. If CC is unlureable with minion, drop a loon or two to lure all troops out.
Lure troops outside of base using a single minion on a building not covered by defense.
If troops are archers/wizards (75%+ of CC defenses) set a single loon about 2 tiles away from them with the closest defensive building in a straight line behind the CC troops. The CC troops will shoot the loon and drop it on their heads, taking care of that problem. :cool:
Attack full stop on rest of base, rage/heal as needed.
I am loving BArch and can't wait for my archers to finish upgrading, only 2 more days:rolleyes:
Thanks for the responses guys! I think I will continue to barch until all the big elixir upgrades are done such as lab, camps, de drill, spell factory etc. Hopefully by that time I will have lvl 6 giants and will use a coring army to get to storages. Still interested in loonion later down the road :)
I think both strategies are effective, its just a matter of preference.
A couple points:
- If your AQ is upgrading, it is much easier to balloon farm in my experience.
- The point about minions cumulative impact on HH numbers vs troops/royals is sound
- The build time is 25 minutes and change for the giant army vs 40 for a 20/60 loon army
- Elixir spend for the army is actually less for balloons 20/60 (although marginal)
- You can farm in Master 3 with 20/60 and effectively negate the DE cost of Minions (Better for Late TH9) vs Giant farming in C3/G1

I'm currently using barch in c2 with extreme success. There are plenty of raidable bases and a nice bonus of 50k each and 200de which means if you win the attack you only need to gain about 10k elixir + bonus to cover your army cost, the rest is pure profit. Yesterday I was able to farm 4mil gold 3.3 mil elixir and over 25k de in one two hour boost. With two hour boosts you can attack with barch about every 5 minutes. When doing this I basically never lose attacks because when you attack over 300 times per season you get good at barching. You could make bam to speed up the training process! Happy farming(:
Lvl6 loons can help a lot more in war.

I have been barching since th7 and I maxed at 7 and 8 before moving to 9, minus some troops that I don't use. Everyone has their own preferences but for the amount of time that I have been barching and making a killing, I believe it to be hands down the best strategy for anyone TH 7-9 at least. Since becoming a TH9 I have stayed in G2 and progressed very quickly, my sweet spot has been 1615-1650 trophies. I almost find it hard to not find a base with at least 200k of each resource and say 700 DE on hand. I honestly have no clue how much DE I make but I became a TH9 roughly the 1st of December '14 and since then have leveled my AQ to 7 and added another level to my BK. Mind you I keep my drills boosted always thats still a good chunk of DE stolen. I can't say much for other attacks because I don't war or do anything else in my clan but farm like its going out of style!
Well VS is subjective and can't be that comparative what is superior or not, which one is more, much or less....because we're NOT RAIDING THE SAME EXACT BASE like (single player campaign)
Anyway....its about preference...what make you ease to get that resources you need....I do barch of course in my TH5 days and 6 but later on TH7 and 8 my instinct is becoming more aggressive and mature playing with both mixing regular and dark troops especially hogs before...now I'm on TH9 I don't have difficulty using combination troops, I could play which one I like (AIR or GROUND) YET I DO GET THE RESOURCES I WANT. Just a clasher's advise don't stick to BARCH or BAM alone... you can't play with the big boys later :)
And YES in farming BARCH is lesser in time.

how does balloons = less gold. if aanything its less elixir bc it take more to make it and your profit wont be as high. but then you can do a full storage raid with loons.Quote:
