As I have just dinged TH8 and the lab is upgrading, I wondered if the first troop to hit level 5 should be barb or rather archer ?

Archer. Most people use them more and (I think) they get more of a boost.
Archers definitely! Archers are more important with BARCH raids plus they make an excellent donation in your clan! Many decent clans require you to have lv 5 archers!

Well, at town hall 9 you may not be able to immediately max your archers due to elixir storages space, in that case it is better to upgrade barbarians than wait for enough storage to max archers.Quote:

Archer to level 5 first, Barb to level 6 first. Why? Because the barb gains 15 extra HP and more damage than the archer at level 6. The archer gets a measly 4 extra HP and 2 more DPS. It also costs 100 elixir more vs the barb's 50 elixir more.
