I haven't really needed to yet. I was tempted so I could get my 3rd builder, I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't but didn't.
For me it part of the waiting game but it's worth it in the end.
I look at it as. I'm at work for 9 hours and I'm in bed for maybe 7 hours if I'm lucky. There's 16 hours I don't have to worry.
Then at the end I can think to myself that's another upgrade that I've done without buying any gems and that's another couple of quid towards my next xbox game.
The leader of the my clan yesterday told me there's loads of gems n trees and rock when you remove them. So I did and went from 12 to 75.so I'll be doing that to boost my gems.
Some great advice here.
Ive gotten ancy too when the timer is close. And then I think about raiding for more loot so when I do have a free builder I'll be able to afford a more expensive upgrade.
I think Im doing pretty good without buying any gems.
I have 4 builders and a th9.

Keep farming. Or find something else to do for 3 hours. Its really not that bad though, especially when you've been waiting 10 days for a upgrade to complete and you only have 3 hours left.
Theres nothing wrong with gemming. During the Summer there are lousy days. I recently cracked $5 in gems to speed up 2 of my barracks and sometimes a spell factory. Its only 30 gems and I remake the gems faster than I use them.
I promised myself I wouldn't gem to upgrade any more buildings though.
I've used gems for the builders and boosting barracks. I don't typically boost things to completion, there are just simply to many upgrades to do for it make a measurable impact over the long term. For me the best use of gems is to get the builders and boosting raiding sessions.
I only use gems when the upgrade is around 1 hour more till completion because after a couple obstacle re movements and a gem box or two, I'll easily gain the gems back. It's only 20 gems or something. And I only do it if I have a lot of loot available because after I log off, I'm gonna need it.
I don't think there's anything wrong with buying gems initially for the 5 builders... but spending gems on build times... I think that pretty much defeats the purpose of this game.
