Well, I just watched this video from "Best Clash of Clans Raids!", and I got impressed the well he explains this stuff: Why you don't have to rush your Town Hall. It isn't my video but I thought it would be useful for all the people that don't understand why.

I applaud the analysis. Too often people simply say, "you should max out because you will have a townhall penalty later when you attack" or simply don't give a reason at all.
That said, I don't agree with a great deal of it. Some of it is minor. For example, using the format that he does, I think the comparison of one rank of canons and archers compared to two X-bows is actually even less favorable for the canons and archers than he mentions (it is more expensive and comment that the collective range of the canons is greater than the X-bows is only valid if an enemy engages all of your canon at the same time).
The bigger issue for me is the mixing up of rushing one's defenses verses rushing one's offense. For example, "[Town hall penalty is] a good reason to max out your defenses and troops first." The town hall penalty is a good reason to make sure you max out the troops you are using for raiding, but it does not directly apply to defenses. A TH9 with max troops and level 1 walls can raid just as effectively as a maxed out TH9. As the video says, "your attacks will become more powerful." It should actually be easier to pay for things the higher your townhall is IF you are keeping your armies up to scratch. Now, I agree the penalty can compound on itself. For example, if you have a miserable offense and you are getting killed by the townhall penalty, then miserable defenses are going to make the situation even worse since holding on to your loot will be that much worse. Still these are separate issues and need to be addressed as such.
If we are going to debate rushing, lets please first decide if we are talking about idiotic rushing or calculated rushing. An argument could easily be made that if you don't understand the game's basics, you are better off maxing out before you move on. That said, I think you would be better off figuring out the game's basics than participating in some of the truly painfully slow crawls I have seen some people make trying to max everything out.
Assuming we are talking about calculated rushing, then next, I think we need to distinguish between rushing offense or defense. With some exceptions for the exact timing of a particular upgrade and perhaps some exceptions for low levels (I don't have any exceptions in mind, but I am sure there are minor ones), I don't see how one benefits from rushing townhalls ahead of one's raiding army upgrades. All the issues with townhall penalties kick in. Perhaps a careful analysis would show a larger improvement for the next townhall's army camps vs the current townhall's research. OK, but in general, if you are rushing your raiding army you are asking for trouble.
Defense on the other hand is an entirely different matter. In my opinion, this is HEAVILY dependent on how frequently you attack and how spread out your attacks are through the day. This afternoon, I looked and over a four hour period, I almost attacked as many times against rich targets as I was attacked over a four day period. If I eliminate the townhall sniping attacks, then it is no longer "almost." My own defenses of course helped tip the sniper vs full attack ratio in my favor; however, the resulting shields were more effective in stopping raids than my canon. I am not even boosting my barracks. If I had been and if I had stayed on a solid block of time, we would be talking about weeks of attacks to match one afternoon. So often you see people say something "smart" like "I love stealing from premie TH9s" as a way of encouraging someone not to rush. Some of the premie TH9s are attacking so much, they don't care that there is one required daily thrashing.
So, when is rushing defense smart? When the offensive gain is greater than the defensive penalty. The offensive gains are easy to see. The penalty is simply that as you move your trophy count up to target bigger and better targets, there are nastier guys attacking you. You are being dumb when this is not the case. Since the penalty is proportionately a lot larger the less you attack per day and the more spread out your attacks are, there are going to be different cut off points for different people. The defensive issues are mitigated by picking up the latest and greatest new toys at each level, but that only helps reduce it so much.
I generally agree that there are a lot of rushed bases out there where it is clear the person is not helping themselves out. I think a sign of that is probably a desire to add an x-bow or inferno tower to an otherwise weak defensive offering. Still, if one cannot dig into the difference between rushing offense and rushing defense, then I cannot say the analysis is complete or compelling.
I agree with your points. For this particularly interesting paragraph, let me add few things. There must be some kind of stage (at the player's development) at which point the player can be considered knowledgeable/ understand about the game's basic, for which he/she can make a decision if rushed town hall is actually desirable for his/her play style or not. Obviously, this stage can't be so low that new players will not aware of it, nor can this be so high that no one can pass without maxing everything. I think the most appropriate town hall level for this crucial decision is level 7. This is where your towers start needing days to upgrade for millions per upgrade.Quote:
