Dragontear: TH8 Anti-Dragon, Anti-Hog war base

Between late stage th7 and th8 I've been in 20-30 wars. I've been attacked 3 times by hogs and all the rest have been mass dragon. I haven't been attacked by anything else. As a result I've set out to create a base to handle those two types of attacks at the expense of others.

Here are the attributes of anti-dragon, anti-hog bases I set out to maximize:

Anti-Dragon:
- Centralized air defenses around town-hall
- A moat to route dragons around town hall and air defenses

Anti-Hog:
- Hog Ring
- Unlurable clan castle

Here is the design I came with, it's called Dragontear.

Please re-read the first paragraph of my initial post.

That said I think it would be non-trivial to get more than one-star on this base with barch but, certainly easier than your average th8 base. The moat to route dragons/hogs around the base I imagine would work somewhat for barch as well.

I'll just say that I've been attacked so many times by dragons and hogs that I would welcome a 2 or 3 star from another army composition just to see something new in clan wars.

Anyways, I don't feel like it would be great against dragons. The air defenses (I may be wrong on this) look like, on the bottom and to a lesser extent the sides, they'd be too far in to hit dragons before the dragons are done with the outer ring, in which case they'd have no distractions before going for the air defenses.

Woah, that is one unorthodox base. Replays would be nice.

It would be really awesome if you could post some defense logs/replays or show/explain dragons and hogs ai on your base.
From what i see, you are trying to make hogs and dragons go around the base before they reach the core.
i'd really like to see the range of AD's.
From what i see,they be in range of the defense ring which are the tankiest of buildings in the game.You'd really want buildings like storages ,cc,king etc to give AD's max time to shoot dragons.

I agree with the above posters, the AD's are too far in and completely out of range to hit dragons. Only time they would hit them is when the drags are near the center and by that point they will clean you. Also have to be careful of BK and CC pulling the drags in.

Time may be your advantage however if the drags just ride the outer ring and stay away from the core.

Definitely +1 for an original design. Very unorthodox and bound to confuse some attackers. I'd be curious to see some war replays/logs as well with this base.

The air defenses are in range to shoot dragons on the top half of the ring but yeah not the bottom. My hope is that if the dragons do move around the ring they will have a large distance to travel between each air defensive structure so hopefully they can do some decent damage before moving into the core. Half the time they will also be shot by the air defenses.

I think probably the best attack against this base is to spread dragons out in a line along a large section of the ring. Then once they take that section out the middle dragons will head towards the core. Hopefully the middle dragons will be few enough that the center air defenses and bombs can handle them. Most people though spam their dragons in one spot and I think attackers would be more inclined to do that with this base since pretty much the entire playing field is occupied.

any smart person would release 2-3 drags and clear the side they will attack from, once the path is clear they will just unleash the rest to head straight for middle.

really bad design, probably only works against tards.

Yep they are in range of the defensive ring but not the outer ring. I wanted to put some storages between the defensive towers up top but I'm afraid that 3 spaces between the defensive towers would be too great and hogs would move into the core. What do you think?

I'll post some shots of the air defense ranges shortly.

The core is so far away from the ring that I think it would take a while for 2-3 dragons to clear out a large enough section to send the rest of the dragons into the middle. Even if you used a rage spell. Then even if the core is taken out I imagine the dragons would clump up moving back out to the outside ring. In which case I think there is a decent chance the attack would run out of time before taking out the rest of the buildings.

The keyword in your post is 'probably'. I don't think anyone can say with certainty what is going to happen when someone attacks this base. That makes it interesting at least to me. There is a chance it will be an epic fail but we'll see.

Was thinking about how I'd attack this:
(My dragon army is usually 8 drags + 1 in CC + 20 barbs + 20 archers. For this I'd bring 2 rage, 1 lightning)

I'd use the barbs/archers and 2-3 dragons to clear out the top area, from the top wizard tower to the top cannon.

At that point, I would be able of dump the rest of the dragons near the top, and they would go for the top air defense.

Rage them when they get near, to speed up the destruction of the core. Use the other rage spell when the first wears off.
Use the lightning spell when the CC troops group up to attack the dragons.

At that point, the 6 dragons in the middle would easily destroy the core, and then go on to take out the rest of the base from the inside out.

Of course, nothing is for sure until we see replays.

Love this anti dragon base! My favorite part is how u can take out the entirety of the bottom of the base with dragons with no air defenses hitting them at all. Incredible!

All you need to do is make a path, then the drags go to center

True but even up at the top you would have to clear out a quarter to a third of the ring before additional launched dragons would head to the center since you still would have to launch them from basically off the map rather than the cleared out part of the ring. At the bottom you would have to clear out half the ring before they head to the center. Especially if I get rid of the spell factory in the center. I'll probably move that.

This bases I very good but is probably susceptible to a barch attack tho but as I am th 9 I will try this and I think that loose archer tower could go in the bottom centre next to the mortar. its a good base tho

Although your defensive buildings might seem to be in range of AD's i think they arent really. Dragons are ranged troops like Archers,Wizards and Minions means they are gonna attack being 3 tiles away not getting targeted by AD's(except Archer tower look in real range of AD's.

They would wouldn't be in range on the initial push inward on the ring but once they turn sideways to go around they would be. *Fingers Crossed* :p

And even up top 2-3 dragons would have to clear out quite a bit of the ring before additional dragons head to the center.

I just designed this base. First war is tomorrow night.

It's a good design and very original. Most of the kids saying they will beat the defense are the same one's who complain that their dragons are going around other bases. LOL

If you move the core part of the town south a couple of squares so the space is more equally distributed it might create a better moat. Move the king out to the outer ring. Put him outside of the walls. You can put an archer tower in its place.

You might consider shrinking the outer ring of walls so it's enclosed. A BARCH army might work against you but they would have to clear out a significant area before the troops would consider moving to the core of the base.

Good luck with that war.

My suggestion is to set up at least one double bomb scenario for hogs. Not enough DPS/range in the middle so the hogs will certainly go around in a ring but deployed from two locations will make short work of this. If you can take out at least one of those groups of hogs, you will do much better in that scenario.

The drags it will be interesting. I actually like this design despite some of the naysayers but it will depend on how they are deployed. If in a clump, you are good, they will circle around and I think you are right..run out of time. But that is an inexperienced deployment. If they deploy in a wall then only the outer dragons will ring and the rest will go straight center and one rage, one heal would keep most alive. Or two rage for you anti heal gents. So it will really depend on if your attacker knows how to path his drags.

Looking forward to the replays, kudos for slapping up an original base design for comments.

If he moved the core down a couple spaces, the dragons count take out ALL of the outer ring without being hit by the ADs.

so i looked at d design and it's very unique one, The most someone can get is a 1-2 star from this design with mass drags and hogs i think , drags will probably run out of time . did u consider Gowipe or gowiwi? bcz my clanmates usually prefer gowipe or gowiwi on a anti hog or anti-dragon base. How do u plan to defend that? Your defensive buildings are so spread out that one does not cover other and u need walls to stop a pekka , she will just go and one hit every single building. i think u will get gowiped :)

And yeah, it would hold noob attackers to less than 3 stars. Anyone who knows what they're doing, though...

Anyone using dragons with half a brain will easily break the ring and path to the core after which your base is toast.
That kind of ring is good against hog riders and literally nothing else. Even th 8 balloons from the bottom would wipe half your towers down there.

I would send balloons to destroy the outer defense. Then send hogs straight to the core with heal and rage spell stacked. This is easy 3 stars.
Check out the holowiwi tactic, it will eat your base easily.

Here is the updated design I ended up using for the war.

I sorted the outside bases from strongest to weakest (except for the army camps, not much that can be done there) to hopefully help funnel spread out dragons up towards the top.


At the last minute I moved the leftmost elixir collector to the right one space to open up a hole. It's the only spot on the field that is open. I did it to make a trap to try and get someone to dump all their dragons in one spot but I'm now regretting that decision. Next war I'm going to take it out.


So far in the war I've been attacked once: 44 percent 0-stars. Mainly a giant/healer attack with some archers, wizards, and 3 dragons. I'm happy to finally see a attack against my base that's not dragons or hogs but, if there is one type of attack that I know won't work on this base it's giant/healer so not really a true test. I will update if I get any more attacks.

Now with the July 3rd update where giant bombs do 1.5x damage to hogs do you know if one lvl 3 giant bomb plus 2 lvl 5 regular bombs is enough to take out lvl 4 hog riders? I'm not going to worry about lvl 5 hogs since that is th9. My giant bombs and bombs are lvl 2 and lvl 4 respectively right now but I'm in the process of upgrading them. I'm hoping this way will work so that I have 3 places to take out the hogs rather than one.

For spread dragons my theory is that it will take spreading out the dragons a lot more than most people will think to do but we'll see what happens.

Precisely... I'd use two-four dragons on the outside, break the ring, then rage and heal remaining dragons to the core.

Move the outer wall in a little closer so the drags would be hit right away by the AD's

Any attack logs or replays to watcj? I plan on trying this next war.

So I ended up getting attacked twice in the last war. First attack for 0-stars and the second attack for 1-star. The second attack was a decent attack and test of the base but neither were good enough to bother going through all the trouble of posting replays. I have some screenshots of the results and army compositions though and I will explain what happened.

First Attack:

The guy launched lvl 4 giants in two groups at the top left side of the base. He raged them and one group punched through the wall first so they regrouped and all got hit by the giant bomb (perfect placement :D). The giants then started heading south along the defensive ring and my dragon and archers in the clan castle came out. They made quick work of the giants. He then launched a lvl 2 dragon and some archers in his clan castle but my lvl 3 dragon and archers took them out. He launched another group of giants and a couple healers but my dragon took out the healers. He then launched a couple wizards which finally took out my dragon. The remaining giants went around the defensive ring up top and were taken out by the giant bomb on the top right. He then launched two dragons where the last giants died. One dragon was shot down by the air defenses when it turned sideways to go around the ring. The other dragon survived and proceeded around the ring but ran out of time before getting 50%.


Second Attack:

This attack was much better executed. He launched balloons all around the entire base with a few groups concentrated on the archer towers. They took out all of the southern defenses but the balloons up top got hit with the air defenses so they only took out about half the defenses up there. He then followed up the balloons with wizards all along the bottom of the base. The wizards though pretty much all went around the ring with only a couple at a time pealing off and heading to the core. When they got there the teslas and barb king where able to handle them. In the end the wizards were able to take out the entire ring but there were only a couple left by that point and were also taken out by the teslas.

So basically the design worked exactly as planned. SUCCESS! :D:D:D

Still waiting to see what happens though against mass drag and hogs. That will be the true test.

I tried to make clear in the initial post that the only two types of attacks that I'm concerned about with this base design are mass dragon and hogs. It's become clear to me though that most people on this forum don't actually read, they just look at the picture then add their two cents.

I'm especially not concerned about GoWiWi or HoLoWiWi because those are TH9 attacks and no TH8 base is going to stand up against a well orchestrated TH9 attack.

What about TH8 with lvl 4 hogs and lvl 5 balloons?

I don't think it'll stand up to either. Four groups of hogs on the outside and it's over. Same with dragons

Credit for an original design. If this is version 1 then it is going to have flaws which can only be improved after seeing attacks and improving upon original design.

I see how creating a path for drags to go to core is the logic but if the distance from drags to core is further than Drags to a side building the AI will still pull them towards ring.

As you only can only deploy troops in certain areas it might be harder than expected.

CC in middle is good for hog attacks but hurts against smart draggers.

No base that has the CC in core can be considered anti-drag. 1/10

Two tips for this base.

1. Place your giant mines next to your wizard towers. Yes you say that 1 giant and 2 small mines kill hogs but not all hogs will be in the same place. WT's will clean up survivors.

2. Place your storage's in the center, outside the center's walls, and next to each air defense. 2 storage for each AD. You dont want to leave your AD exposed.

An experienced th8 dragon rusher can 3 star that no problem. you could clear out one side with 2 or 3 dragons with barb king and clan castle wiz/witch/arch and then the dragons would go straight to the center...drop a rage and the base is literrally 100% destroyed after that

Barch with BK and AQ on the bottom and then rage them at the core. No way this base could hold up

This is the worst base I've ever seen in my life.
The dragons will simply destroy all buildings around and when they're in the center the atackker will use one rage and 3 stars.

this base could be easily 3 starred by th8 gowipe or barch. also all it will mean is dragons just go around outside than the attacker can use all their spells after they destroy all the outside stuff and go to centre :/ maybe bring the outer ring in so that it is range of air defences but this would mean that it is still flawed to barch or gowipe.

you got attacked by those 2 strategies because your base was an easy attack to those strategies. now, people will attack you in other ways.
and, the cc will put the drags to the core with an attack from the top, and even if it wont, you dont need to be a skilled attacker to get to the core: maybe keep 4 drags until the other drags clear the top and only then depoy them- with a rage spell they will be in the core in a sec.
another thing, not every base with a ring is an anti-hog base. ur giant bombs wont even slow down a skilled hogger.
needless to say that any other attack on this base is a give away of 3 stars

I agree with the last few posters. This base might stand up to a lvl 1 drag attack with low level rage and heal spells but I could 3 star it easily by spreading drags out and using barb king plus a few drags for cover them line the rest up along one side and rage them to the middle. Would love to see some replays and it is an interesting concept though as stopping all drag attacks at lvl8 th have proven all but impossible for me too.

"Frothing at the mouth for the war to start if I were to see this as a number four base. If the opponent clan were to fall way behind almost everyone in my clan could one star this base for good loot"
