Why spend 40k searching for that 200k gold find? Chain barch the 100k guys and make a ton per hour. That's what I do when loot sucks. Gold has been good in the silver1-gold1 range though.

Timezone is something i've wondered too. I am UK timezone so right now its 10.50am. I usually raid around this time for a couple of hours and then I may do so again tonight. I've stopped barrack boosting while the economy settles because i've found its really not been worth it. Kinda frustrating because im getting to the point where builders will be free later on and i'd like to upgrade my mortars to level 7, not going to happen with this scarce loot.
Do the gob single player levels?????
I'm a TH8 in gold I. I'm using barch and there are plenty of inactive players. It only takes me about 5-10k to find filled collectors every time
This morning I've dropped from crystal 2 to gold 3, spent about 150k nexting and I'm up 25k gold and about 100k elixir, it's absolutely terrible at the moment.
I won't bother except in clan wars for a few days.
So many replies to this thread without a TH identifier to see if it is even remotely applicable to the OP. A TH9 isn't going to have the same success in a league with a TH7 due to the penalty.
To the OP's point, the clash economy will return to normal a week or two after the boost hits. Not a whole lot of people come back for just a boost and the gains during boost week will more than offset the doldrums for the adjustment period after the boost ends. You usually see more of an influx of players for new updates.
I am a TH9 sitting at 1800-1900 and things are just fine up here. Time of day will have a lot to do with it. Don't raid during the US work hours as loot typically sucks then if you are counting on collector raids. I do storage raiding since I've maxed out elixir upgrades. I build a balloonion army and find a TH8 or early TH9 and take most of the resources. I'll also hit a collector raid if it comes up and just not use any spells.
This strategy makes it easier to find a base to raid. I don't have to wait for full collectors. I can simply attack the first non dual-IT base with 200k+ in resources (takes about 5 minutes), queue up another army, log for the shield from a TH snipe, wait an hour or two while I do RL stuff and then repeat.
And to those people saying you don't need collector raids for the clash economy, you must be bad at math. Here's a fun experiment for you to try... add up the cost for all the buildings you need to upgrade at TH9 that require gold. Now, take that number and divide it by your daily gold output from mines (500k I think). Voila, you now know that it will take almost a year to get a TH9 maxed on just mines assuming you don't get raided. And doing storage raids doesn't add any new resources to the economy... it's just a form of trading loot with other players. That is why the collectors on abandoned bases are essential to the game economy.
Okay silly question. But how does one identify an abandoned base.
Town Hall 8, Gold I. I'm fine...
