Walls - Are they worth it?

I recently maxed out TH8 defences and since then have been working on skulls. Despite being a firm believer in maxing each town hall I have begun to question whether or not walls are worth the time and effort you have invest in maxing them. The first and most obvious issue with walls is how expensive they are, there are 225 walls at TH8 and skulls cost 500K each. That's a total of 112.5M gold too finish them. Whilst ive been farming skulls I've seen a few of my fellow clan mates skip them and move onto TH9 and get a massive head start over me. This made me question again whether or not walls are worth it. Also with the prevalence of loonian and hogs at the highest levels of clash walls are becoming somewhat obsolete. personally i'm not sure that walls are worth the time and effort and I can't see myself getting 250 legos at TH9. I'm interested in what other people think though, are they worth it in your opinion and if so why?

i agree completely OP, i maxed everything in th8 (including king and de troops :p) but never managed to finish walls. I left to th9 with only about 120 skulls finished. It just wasted a lot of builder time to stay back to complete walls, so in your case I would just move along to th9.

You have good points about walls not being worth the time and effort and I agree with those points. But I think high level walls without gemming are the mark of a true farmer. They are a badge of honor. If you are up to the challenge then do it, if you aren't, then don't. But in some cases higher level walls are worth it. When an attacker has run out of wallbreakers and is only using ground troops, the extra hp they provide can be the difference. But maybe the biggest reason I do them is for the looks. There isn't a much better feeling in the game then zooming out on your base and saying dang, my base looks good. It almost makes all the grinding worth to me. Hope this helped!! Get max TH8 walls. Losing out on TH7 loot at TH9 sucks. I didn't do it and it took me so much longer at TH9. Now I'm working my way through Legos with maxed defenses, and won't go to 10 without all 250.

I see your point. But walls are some of the best defenses in the game against ground troops. Plus there is an intimidation factor in them too.

I assume you have all defensive research complete in TH8. Then make sure you have all your research done. At the same time you are doing research, you can do your wall upgrades. At this point, many advance to TH9, while a few stay to complete the walls.

I would complete level 8 walls in TH8 before advancing. Because once you have level 8 walls, you don't have to upgrade any walls until you are in TH10 and after other defensive buildings are done. If you don't upgrade to level 8 now, you will always have problem on upgrading def vs upgrading walls, all the way into TH10.

I don't find hogs to be a problem in Crystal/Master leagues. You will find plenty of Level 6 Giants and Golems as tanks. The walls will help tremendously.

They are worth it if you intend to be competitive. If you are happy sitting in gold everyday or getting pushed around in war by smart players then you don't need to get them too high.

I'm planning to max my defenses for TH8 before moving to TH9 but not walls. It's too annoying and time consuming to do those skulls. Makes the game not fun anymore and tbh it is losing its fun at TH8.

Like many things in the game it depends on your play style. I watch the higher level TH members on my clan during wars and GoWiPe and GoWiWi are very popular tactics. Walls will really help defend those types of attacks.

Hogs have faded in popularity since they buffed the giant bombs. You do have a point about Loonion, I have seen that used in both wars and raiding.

The intimidation factor works on me. When I'm looking for a village to raid one of my factors in picking a target is the level of walls. We've all seen those TH 9 villages with level 6 or even 5 walls and I will attack those even if they have the xbow.

I don't think you need to finish walls at th8, OP. I didn't; I went the way your clanmates did and got a head start at th9 after I finished all my defenses and elixir troop upgrades. Great decision, IMO. I eventually finished all my skulls, my Queen is going to level 15 at the moment and I've started legoes.

Meanwhile, a lot of my clanmates, who were ahead of me at th8, have just recently come up to th9 and are playing catch-up.

The whole 'badge of honour' thing is the main reason I'm doing skulls, I just want to be able too say that I fully maxed TH8.

If you can farm 112M gold in 5 days more power to you, I've been doing them for ten days and done just over 100

I'm facing the same problem. I've got about 20 of those skulls done while upgrading defenses and other stuff.
I've got 4 Archer Towers and 3 teslas left before I can go on to Th9.
But I will stay and finish those walls right now...because as people have said (and I agree)..

1. Once you get level 8 walls, you don't really have to worry about walls until TH10. (Unless you decide to farm for level 9 walls at TH9).
2. Walls = Intimidation.
3. Higher walls = Less barchers attacking you.
4. Greater chances of winning those nasty level 6 giant defenses.
5. You are honoured and appreciated + dude...the base looks so damn good!!

6. Clash isn't going anywhere. These people who are running ahead...they won't really be at an advantage (it'll just be temporary).

I'm 2 weeks out from being in your same situation op. I think letting all builders sit idle, with maxed elixir, while you farm walls is a mistake. I will at most leave my TH to upgrade alone after everything else is capped and spend that week knocking out as many skulls as I can but no more than that. I'm at 50 now. Heck maybe once I'm not dumping gold to upgrade defenses it will go faster than i think.

I think I stopped maxing my walls at TH7. For th8 and th9, I was fully maxed including all possible troop upgrades EXCEPT walls, before moving on. I'm th10 now with max infernos and am just now getting around to my skull walls. I can honestly say "it would've been nice" to get the walls upgraded, but I haven't really had a lot of negative effects of my walls being lower than max.

I pushed off Skulls at TH8 and upgraded to TH9 and it's been hanging over my head ever since.
I'm now a maxed TH9 and have ~70 Skulls left. I learned my lesson and won't go to TH10 until I finish Legos.

It's not just about being aesthetically pleasing or a badge of honor as it serves a functional purpose as well.

My workers will be chilling for a bit, but I'm farming in Crystal raiding for DE and Gold so I can continue to level my Royals and finish my DE upgrades while I upgrade my walls.

I fully maxed out my TH8 base (troops, walls, defenses) before moving to TH9, and I don't regret it one bit. I had sleeping builders and full elixir tanks for a few weeks while I was grinding out skull upgrades, but my clanmates got to enjoy an endless supply of dragon and wizard donations (I would cook full batches each night and donate them as fast as possible each morning before starting to BARCH).

I hit TH9 a week ago with five sleeping builders, and completely full storages (gold, purple, and DE). It has made getting up to speed at TH9 much simpler, and there is a sense of satisfaction seeing full skulls all over the place (I upgraded all 25 new walls to skulls already). I haven't had anyone hit my DE with anything but lightning since arriving at TH9, and the vast majority of the attacks on me are snipes (even before my xbows became operational). I attribute this to my walls.

CoC is not a race. What do people mean when they say that you are "falling behind" your clanmates? Just enjoy the challenges at each TH and do what you want. If you're bored of being at TH8, by all means, move on.

It really depends on what you expect to get out of the game at TH9 and TH10...

If you dream of having level 11 walls, then by all means max them at TH8 and also at TH9.

If you dream of one day reaching masters / champs, well high level walls are actually completely optional, I've seen loads of rubbish walls in lower masters (pink, even gold), and on my way to champs to be honest I don't really give too much notice to the level of the walls, the layout is more important as is the level of the heroes. Same goes for clan wars - a decent raider won't worry too much about the level of your walls.

Now don't get me wrong, high level walls can make a big difference, in terms of holding off troops from getting your TH and/or getting a 3 star, especially holding back heroes now they are not as powerful. But in terms of preventing a 2-star loss, high level walls are generally only useful when the attacker messes up somewhat.

At risk of stating the obvious, doing only walls can become very boring. Personally, I did some skulls at TH8, but not at the expense of having an idle lab. I did some level 9 walls at TH9, but not at the expense of having an idle lab. I've managed to do some more level 9 walls at TH10, in fact now that my defenses are all maxed in 6 days, walls are all I've got left to spend my gold on, so I'm finishing off level 9 walls while I climb to Champs. Does my base get crushed with only level 8 and 9 walls? Not really... in the middle of Masters is would average a 1-star loss; around 3100 2-star losses are more the norm but that's fine by me especially as attackers are almost always a good 200 cups above me and usually my heroes are sleeping. So I think my walls are OK as-is. I've certainly managed to 2-star plenty of bases with level 10 walls, and some with level 11 walls myself...

I'm a TH8 looking to max skulls while wrapping up the last few lab upgrades. It's a grind, but it gives me something to do with my gold. And hey, they look good too.

After TH7 where I had no issues keeping walls up with my TH level and having them maxed by the time I had everything else maxed I have never allowed my builders to sit idle. Every day on the front end where those builders are not workig is a day that you have to invest on the back end. I am now TH10 and I have approximately 2/3 skull walls and they have not affected my performance and since I have been sitting in gold farming even purple is better than my peers. My last push into masters I had over 40 defenses that season. High level walls are a badge but if you dont want to wait on them you dont need to. You may have to work a little harder for loot at higher levels but it is easier to get gold than it is to get time(which only comes through the use of gems). I can invest an additional hour of farming but I dont want to spend on gems. This is an individual game though. Do what makes you happy. I have a clanmate that rushed his base to TH9, he knows that it isnt recommended but he doesnt regret his lvl 3 AD or lvl 4 mortars. He loves having lvl 6 archers. More power to him. Do what makes you happy. If you are happy you are never wrong.

With the new troops/hero AI, where they go around bashing walls when there is a perfectly good building to attack next to them, I would say upgrade your walls as much as you can so they can waste more time bashing walls.

You should be doing walls on the sides when upgrading other stuff, if you're in a situation where you maxed every defence and got only walls left, it's time to move on onto next TH level.

Same boat. Chose to hit upgrade, I have 100 skulls and 125 purple crystal.

hogs don't care about walls
drags don't care about walls
balloons don't care about walls
minions don't care about walls
jump spells don't care about walls
frankly, wall breakers don't really care about walls. A little base design effort would stymie wall breakers more than higher level walls.

And to add insult to it all,the upgrade from purple crystal to skulls is a whole 500 hit points. A whole 25% for 112.5 million gold.

If I can't farm at TH9 or if it harms my clan to no end in wars that I leveled up and we wind up facing the gods of COC in wars, I'll just quit. I'm ok with that. But the cost of walls is ridiculous. Watch every youtube vid of mega level players and tell me... how many times did you see some mega wall change the fate of a raid? I can't recall a single time.

I'm doing as many as I can before I'm maxed. For example, I'm going to stagger my level 6 AD upgrades and give myself a week or two to do walls as I work on those.

I'm relatively new to the game. What are Skulls? And Legos? lol

I don't think the average player finishes all their lvl 8 walls in 5 days. But maybe I'm just a casual.

To a casual player I think walls are completely overrated. Once you hit full skulls I think that is more than enough for most people. Unless you plan on pushing and staying in Champs then there is very little point to grinding out walls for months on end if you are not a serious CoC player when it comes to putting in time.

I have 6 legos left and then I am done with walls. I never did them all at once, I did them over many months as I did other defenses as well so it was not mind numbing and boring. No point in going any higher. Heck, most people people in C1-M1 don't even have skull walls and do just fine because 90% of attacks are done with troops which walls don't effect anyways.

I currently have all of my defenses maxed at TH8 and am grinding skull walls. I personally find this part fun. Just about everything is maxed out and I have a ton of elixr. I'm the leader of my clan and donate a TON of troops for clan war cc's as well as offensive cc's during the war. I win almost all of my defenses in clan wars and find it extremely valuable to upgrade to skulls for the future of my competitive CoC gaming.

I've heard too many players have such a difficult time getting their walls upgraded at TH9 and regretting they didn't max them out at each TH level.

I have purples with about 20 skulls done in my core. Once my core is all skulls I'll think about doing Legos for the core. Skulls are a waste for external walls as they still get crushed by 2 x level 5 wb.

I can't believe people will sit around for days or weeks with elixir storages overflowing and builder's wasting time while sleeping so that they can work on walls. You'll have plenty of time to work on walls when you are maxed out TH10 with nothing else to do. Playing like this is really boring. I don't play the game to be bored. I play it to have fun. Of course that's just the way I see it. It doesn't mean that you can't enjoy maxing out your TH8 :)

146 skulls done, 79 to go. As long as 4/5 builders stay busy I will keep walling. If I run out of work for them I will move up to the next th. I doubt that will be the case though before I am have all skulls at th8.

Do they help? Tremendously. But are they your top priority? Definitely not.

How would they help? Because matchmaking is a social game. If you have maxed walls then giants/gowiwipes might not attack you. If you have maxed ADs then balloons and dragons might not attack you.

General rule of thumb is don't be suck.
Never be the playground bully victim we see too much in crystal with pink walls or lower.
Level 7 walls is acceptable.
Level 8 walls is the boundary between casual and farmer.
Level 9 walls is the boundary between farmer and hardcore.

Pick whichever level you want.

I think you should just move on up to Town Hall 9. Most people move up to Town Hall 9 with light crystal walls! It's a good thing that you have lots of patience. That will help you do well in the game.

With what I have heard about loot at TH9 I would stay at TH8 and max as much as you can!

i am also TH8 and will be doing this, simply because the loot is better and the farming is easier at lower TH :)

Man, I also have heard tons of things like that in the past months and you know what? I'm doing my best raids here at TH9. On the paper, TH7 should be the best town hall level for loot... on the paper, because in practice you can just forget about raiding a decent town hall 8, imagine a town hall 9. So just forget those 3-400k storages. Even if you're a collectors raider, with level 4 troops, if the collectors are close to the defences, you get smashed in the blink of an eye by both TH8 and 9 defences, risking not to get all the resources and having no chances to get the 50%. With level 6 troops, you can BARCH TH9-10 collectors getting the 50% and the league bonus, and you can even raid TH7-8 storages quite easely.

Walls never seem worth it, but you would be surprised how many people will skip your base just because of the high level walls. I have low defense towers, but my walls are sick, no one touches me, I will go 4-5 days without an attack attempt.

Yes walls are worth, if you are a serious raider or player, and want to go far do it now, because once you hit Th10 it's so much harder to find a good lootable base, money will be tight.

Personally, I upgraded about half my walls to skulls before I jumped to TH9. Once I was in 9, based on the loot and how active I am, it wasn't too difficult to upgrade my walls. I'll probably try to get all lego's before I jump to TH10 in a couple weeks. I think it depends on your activity and where you want to be in clan wars. GOWIPE/GOWIWI are guaranteed 2 stars if your walls are lagging behind.

Of course go to TH 9 dont waste ur time ur ganna b at skulls forever if u continue go and enjoy ur fun instead of depressingly slaving away

It really depends on the league you're farming at. I'm a TH level 9 with 210 legos, my defences are at max level for a town hall level 8 except for the level 3 X-Bows and level 7 mortars. Nice layout. I'm farming at Crystal 2 and right there people don't think twice about attacking me, especially now that I'm sitting on a 120k+ DE storage.

i agree on the intimidation factor. a th9 with lvl 8 walls looks way more intimidating then a th9 lvl 7 walls. and even though both require the same amount of wb to bust through them, it does means more work for lvl 9 walls. which require 3 wb to bust through them. i say stay at th8 and prey on those meaty th7s while you still can.

as someone who has nearly maxed out firewalls, yes it fights off attacks at the highest level.

someone with purple or pink walls can easily be 3ed by another max th10

Skull walls are expensive but, they are not impossible to do. It all depends on your activity. Also, if there is a large discrepancy between your struc. upgrades and wall upgrades then you were just lazy and didn't plan your upgrades well enough.

Towards the end of th8, the upgrades take so long that you have to have an idle worker to throw all your daily gold in walls. (You either plan your upgrades precisely where one finishes everyday giving u a chance to expunge all that extra gold in walls or you keep one idle. I recommend the former but, you can keep one idle for a day or two in order to preserve the sequence of idle workers.)

Point of the walls is simple: to delay the army from getting to your defense and storage as much as possible while your def. strucs splash them to hell. If you combine good walls w/ an intelligent design then you'll always have success defensively. (I only say this 'cause someone pointed out earlier that design is more important than walls. At th9 and 10, design HAS to be good but, you have to have good walls too.)

Whilst some players point out to hogs, dragons etc which ignore walls and say what's the point of upgrading walls, I say that the reason SC has implemented these units is because upgraded walls are so good; not the other way around.

On a side note, loons, dragons, hogs (plus the needed spells) are so expensive that it doesn't make any sense for one to use these units for a normal raid. Therefore, they shouldn't be considered in this discussion.

Now, regarding th8 and skull walls sepcifically, I can't believe that anyone will have a problem maxing walls at th8. TH7 and 8 are full of farms around 1600+. TH8 army can't fail at a th7. I regularly used at least 2 spells w/ a 90K army to raid at that level and got everything gold related done while having 3 full elixir storages. (I couldn't give that thing away.) TH8 was one of the best levels to convert elixir into gold.

If you are having problems maxing th8 walls then you are doing something wrong or not doing enough.

Walls are expensive and not a guaranteed defense. However, if you have great walls and smart AD placement and bombs you really limit your enemies options. And that is a huge advantage. You really put yourself behind not upgrading walls as you go along.. All at once is a daunting task. And quite boring. But if upgrading them makes you want to quit the game, just go on without them. There's a billion Th9 bases in a lot worse condition lol
