how did this matching happen?

Not complain, just want to know how the matching system works.
We don't war a lot, however, we love clan war, win or lose.
Last time, we were matched to "seventh sense", a very strong clan. we had to fight hard for the win.
This time, we are matched with another strong clan, geez, a little bit too much for us.

Th 9, we have 24 Th 9s, they have 21 th9s. in fact, their bottom base is the only Th8. we have more than 10 TH8s and several Th 7s.

all their TH 9s have > level 1 xbow, some of our new Th9s still building.

You pressed the start war button around about the same time as they did and there the other available remotely close matches were already matched so your clan lucked out.

Yup. We have a very decent clan with 45 players. Some matches have been un-winnable (especially those ridiculously organised Asian clans) , some have been fabulously close and the last 2 we have smashed a clearly over-matched clan.
We dont moan when it's tough, enjoy when its easy and love it when it close...All part of the fun

I've been really impressed with the standard of matching recently. I believe our last three outings have been very close and gone down to the last couple of raids. The upcoming war looks to be the same too.

But you do get these odd matches sometimes. Just don't worry about it try your best and see what happens.

I didn't ask any question, any half decent clan will tell you they don't follow recommended target.

It is there for people like you, who doesn't know which target to attack unless told by a computer generated target and do not know your own capability.

Just do your best and dont let them have an easy win. :cool:

No one has actually answered the OP's question yet...

The CW matchmaking algorithm takes the offensive capability (troop/spell levels) and defensive power (defense/wall/trap levels), and matches you with a loosely similar clan of the same size. It doesn't​ take into account TH levels, trophies, or base layouts.

We have 14 3-star wins, while they have 7.
some of their top players did not use 2 attacks, otherwise we have no chance.

As the war presses on you'll sometimes see the recommended target well above your level because 1 star there is your best shot at a star.

This is incorrect. TH level has the highest weightage amongst all factors. It is true that trophies, base layout, or level has nothing to do with it. But TH level, hero level, offensive strength and defensive strength are the main factors.

Your best chance to winning the most star blindfolded is definitely not your recommended target. As war presses on, if all the top bases are 3 starred, and lower bases are still available, you will see recommended target well below your level because thats the only bases left.

No. Town Hall level has very little to no weight. It only seem that way because higher Town Hall level unlocks new defenses and higher defense level. That is it. You can get to TH10 with no other buildings.

Hmm. Thanks for the quotation from supercell, however, I have a lot of clan war experience and do not believe this to be true. The reason is because I have seen with my own eyes a base that was a TH10 but with a TH4 base. Everything was pretty ♥♥♥♥. A TH6 member in our clan, was able to 3-star it with ease. I really wish I had taken a screenshot of that base and its ranking, but that base was ranked higher than other people in that enemy clan that had far better bases in terms of defensive ability and offensive ability.

I would also like to present counter proof from a beta tester of clan wars who explicitly said that matchmaking is based on TH and Hero level. Please check out his video and what he says:

That supercell staff member probably hasn't seen the algorithm they coded up or something lol.

How to get advantage in clan war matching

Do you want to be on the side that is more advantage in clan war matching? Have you seen all the crying when someone is in the clan war with some clan much better than them? Do you want to be the one laughing instead of crying on forum when you lose? The solution is easy
Follow this guide with 4 steps, and you will be on the laughing side.
First, rush your TH (very important), because even your defend is match against TH8, you still seem to have big advantage when your clan are all TH10 and the opponents are all TH8
Second, don't bother with offense, just focus on defend. What it means is don't bother upgrade your troop in laboratory, and don't bother to unlock higher level troop, then your attack will be factor out during the match up. Then, because of your crappy offense ability, you will face with some easier opponents. That means, on the surface, all your TH level and defenses will look much better than your opponents.
Third, get some very low TH in your rush TH10, this will bring down the overall ranking, and now you will group up with a bunch of TH8, because you have some TH5 mixing with your TH10.
Finally, (just my theory and observation) keep your trophy and members to the minimal. I have noticed that, every war my clan goes up against, the opponents are within 2000 trophies of our own. Also, every time after mass recruit and our trophies bum up, then we will go against some clan that is very much better or difficult to deal with. In contrast, when we kick all the inactive members, and our trophy drop, we have a breeze in next war.
Sorry for the long post, now follow this guide and you will never lose in clan war ever again.

Honestly, ranking in clan war doesn't really matters, I see many example where our clan, myself included was able to 3 star #1 but failed to 3 star a lower ranked base. It all comes down to the layout and the design of the base.

Godson is a very well known youtuber of CoC, however, his video is very dated,it goes all the way back in April. Clan War has since then changed dramatically. As much as I respect Godson, he is not a Supercell employee, he can only say what was being told by Supercell employee. So I will take Steve's word over Godson's any day.

And maxing out of a base before upgrading the town hall has always being a standard strategies playing CoC, it has nothing to do with clan war.

I dont agree ranking doesnt matter. Supercell uses a certain algorithm to rate the strength of a certain site. Why would they use 2 different algorithm, 1 for ranking and 1 for matchmaking. They will certainly use the same algorithm, give a certain point for a site, and use that point for both matchmaking and ranking. So ranking in a way tells you how much point is given to that site.

I would guess the real algorithm and what they tells us is the algorithm is not exactly the same. It is like a politician or company CEO always tells the politically correct answers vs the real answers.
I start to think that maybe matchmaking is based on TH level, Trophies and # wars won.

I agree what you are saying. I was afraid I didnt make myself clear. I meant that the ranking Supercell uses to us doesnt make any difference to us, we attack the hardest base we can 3 star regardless of what number they are.

It makes a HUGE difference Aspekt. Now that I know how they do the ranking, I am able to guarantee that my clan ALWAYS faces an easy enemy. ALWAYS. Whenever we face an enemy, our levels are higher across the board, from top of the clan to bottom of the clan. To prove it, here are some screenshots of our last two wars:

The maxing-out of the TH is a natural result for me not because we have always known it is a good practice, but because I have seen it first hand as described earlier, where I found a base that had nothing except a TH10, and for that alone it was ranked so high compared to other bases below it. Wish I had a screenshot of that right now.

And yes, one of the ways I achieve this is by disallowing hero upgrades without permission from a co. I don't want a lvl 60 with a BK 5, for example, since according to Godson's video, hero level is an important factor.

At the beginning of the war your recommended target is well below your equivalent strength. I'm a max TH8 and even though the guy directly across from me is also a max TH8 I still get the very last village as my recommended target. As the war presses on it moves that target to where you can get the most stars. So if all the bottom guys get at least 2 stars, it then will switch you to an unstarred village higher up. If all the top guys got hit first your recommended target will not change.

What is the point man? Do you enjoy having all wins on your war log more than actually having a challenge?

Your recruitment thread is hilarious. You pretty much just want people who only care about winning at wars even though there is little challenge and won't accept people who throw off your matching system.

This is an equally challenging game, in fact, more so. What is our game? Its not just to win. That's easy. It's to get max stars. Super challenging. And super fun. Even super educational. We haven't achieved it. We missed out by 1 star in our last 40-man war. Many other clans have achieved it. Losing one war may be fun. But losing more than one war in a row when you put in your best and lose all those resources and get nothing back: not so fun; maybe for you Aspekt and Terraist, but definitely not for me.

Its a different game, I agree, but to assume its 'boring' is a judgement you cannot make, unless you were in the clan. Certainly, within our clan no one finds it boring to win this way. In fact, most of my members don't even know the theory behind our strategy.

Also keep in mind that everyone has a different motive to play the game. Some people want to push push push. What's the point there? Others want to donate donate donate. What on Earth is the point of that? Some people, like yourself, want to have close matches where you win sometimes and lose other times, and others, like myself, play to win. That's what makes me addicted to the game.

Exactly. Still see no point in all these clans stacking their players to ensure easy victories. Terraist, how on Earth is a goal of getting max stars 'easy'? Its super hard. And our clan has been unable to achieve it. But we are getting better and perhaps we'll get there, perhaps we wont. Some of our best players were recruited from this forum. Also, just like top-200 clans look for members that can and know how to push, just like donation clans look for people that donate a lot of good troops and don't donate bad troops, a war clan will seek those that are good at war and have structured themselves in a way that will allow the clan to win war. Go look at any sports league like soccer, where leagues buy players that make it 'easier' for them to get the title. So then, if they win the cup does that mean they had nothing exciting going on?

We need to take war clans as seriously as top-200 pushing clans, or top donation clans. You are the one that started an awesome thread about clans that get max stars, Terraist, so I am surprised you think of them as 'stacking their players to ensure easy victories'. EVERY decent war clan will be extremely selective on what kinds of bases they allow into their clan. Its part of the game, and is a significant challenge in its own right.

No it's not part of the game really... well, not if you talk about playing it fairly. I know how hard it is to get max stars, but my old clan did it with 50 people that were not stacked in a way to get easy matches, just like I'm sure most others did. I love war and take it very seriously, but that means I want to play against people who are equal to or better that the clan I am in. I take no pleasure from stacking a clan to beat on those who get mismatched against us. Like I said, there is no challenge in that. Getting 75% of available stars in a very even match is MUCH MUCH MUCH more fulfilling to me that trying to get 100% of the stars against a clan that is much weaker. Period.

We get it, you enjoy this style of play and think it's challenging. Most of us know better and chose a different type of challenge. One that involves... you know... the aspect of challenge.

First of all, getting 100% stars will be very fulfilling, even to you. Winning a tough match, is also fulfilling. If you want 'unfair' fights, check out what one enemy did with us, RoninMarch: https://www.facebook.com/Roninmarchclans. Go there and see what they did. They posted pics of every single one of our bases by sending a spy in. THAT, you can argue is unfair. But despite the fact that they did that, we thrashed them without us spying on them. And we have never done such things like spying on enemy traps etc.. THAT is fighting fair (they were a good clan btw, not the ordinary run-of-the-mill war clan). What part of my recruiting thread seemed to try to recruit 'unfair' people to you? We ask that people have Maxed out bases. Duh. And we ask that they have good war stats. Duh. Nothing 'unfair' about it. Those are our rules, because we believe it will allow us to perform well in war. If I *really* wanted to game the system, then I'd say that I want people with high level offense but negligible defense, but we are doing fine without needing to go to that extreme. In any case, who's to say that it really works anyway; no one truly knows their algorithm except them.
