help for naive newbie!

Hi, am hoping you will be able to help me :)
I started playing a while ago just when I had the time, but I recently fractured my back and have been playing a lot more (i have the bug!) However, i made some serious school boy errors in the beginning!:(

I bought gems to speed things up, and have now come to realise I concentrated on the wrong things! My town hall is level 8 yet my walls are level 3. My defenses are seriously lacking too, with archer towers level 5/6 as are my canons. I admit i never read any how to's on the game and there is a lot I obviously don't know, even the basics. I do want to learn though and have tried reading some online tutorial kind of things and asking on chat in the game but there I have found no-one very helpful unfortunately.
So where do i go from here? I am not a member of a clan as again I do not really understand their workings and benefits. Its seems to take forever to build up enough gold and elixir to upgrade anything and I don't want to buy more gems as that would be the easy option. If someone can give me some tips and pointers it would be much appreciated :D

Concentrate on splash defense first (mortars, wizard towers) to upgrade and get up your laboratory and troops, max them out as soon as you can. The better your troops are, the better you'll be in farming resources in attacks and the quicker you have the next update going.
What league are you in? As soon as you can (trooplevelwise), push up to gold, farming is easier there (though I'm still on silver I myself).

You might want to take a look into the thread I linked in my signature - I basically made the same mistake than you and try to catch up as a premature TH7 now. :)

Thank you for your reply! I don't know what league i'm in (i did say i didn't know much!) where does it say that information? I will look at the link now and thank you again!

I would focus on:

-Laboratory upgrades
-Collector upgrades
-Mortar/Wizard Tower upgrades
-Wall upgrades

These because you will need good troops to attack, you will need resources to fund upgrades, you will likely get barched due to your bad defences and so splash damage is the best defence and walls are a must as they will be relatively cheap and will help on the defence.

am i right in thinking another way to increase gold and elixir is to attack others-and do I do that via the attack button on the left?

On the positive side a rushed th8 is usually recoverable as the loot modifier isn't too bad. As others have said max your archers and barbs asap and then your camps. If you don't have 5 builders then investing in those speeds the game up. If you have the time, and it sounds like you do, learn to barch. At th8 you can build a 200 troop army, something like 100 barbs 92 archers and 4 wall breakers. With that army you can rebuild every 20 minutes or so. Then look for bases with loot in the mines and pumps, usually a bunch of trees or tombstones is a good indicator. Silver 2 or 3 has plenty of available loot. If you have the time shoot for 300 successful raids a season, 2 weeks.

Yes, but only attack what you know you can win. You will gradually get better and eventually will be able to attack townhall 8/9.

great thank you all help is greatly received. however, I'm not good on the 'lingo' what is barch? also when i click on attack it doesn't give me an option to chose anyone it just takes me to someones base? sorry if I'm being really 'simple' :confused:

Barch is an attack strategy where you use nothing but barbarians and archers (you can use a few wall busters to help). Typically, if you have 4 barracks to train troops you load up two of them with barbarians and two with archers.

As for the attack, yes it takes you to someone else's base. You have 30 second to decide if you want to attack them or not. If you don't wish to attack, push the Next button and it will take you to someone else's base. You can keep doing this as many times as you need to, so you can find a good base to attack.
