Is it adviseable to upgrade dragon unit to level 3 just to be used in clan wars? Or should I stick using level 1 hogs / level 5 giants and archers and focus on upgrading my tier 1 troops to level 5?

Sorting Tier 1 first is better for your farming and Lvl 2 Dragons are fine for Mass Attacks in Clan Wars, as are Lvl 1 Drags if you have to...
Thanks man! It's just that I am currently having a hard time 3 starring TH9s which we almost always encounter during clan wars with my current troops. And 1 star is a huge help in winning wars.
Normally I leave lower bases to my other clanmates and what's left for me are the higher ones. :(
3* well develop TH9 and well position 4x AD L5 or higher, is definitely difficult. Even by throwing 4x rage spells. So far I only manage up to 2* with my L3 dragons (11x).

If you don't have a problem with spending the elixir, then upgrade your dragons. The extra health helps quite a bit in raids and when you are just using one or two dragons in an army. But it's up to you and doesn't matter too much if you don't upgrade them.
With my n00b skill, 50-50 chance. Although I try control the initial deployment, it depends on the dragons once it goes in, how it turn left/right, and which building the dragon chooses to attack next. Even with rage to guide it.
