With the upgrade, BK and AQ squat due to a shrunk range, but I just used an attack in war and the King followed my troops well outside his range. Im talking all the way across the map.

If you click on the altar you'll see it actually has a decent range now.. are you sure he followed your troops completely out of his range and into the corners of the base in the complete opposite direction of his altar?
It is a known glitch where the king will continue to target the same troop regardless of it's distance to his altar.
