I'm debating on if I should buy a barbarian king or not. Some people have told me that they are only really effective against giants. So let me know if it is worth it to spend 500 gems on one.

I'm debating on if I should buy a barbarian king or not. Some people have told me that they are only really effective against giants. So let me know if it is worth it to spend 500 gems on one.
Don't gem resources, you can farm that 10k dark elixir with relative ease.
Go higher in trophies and you'll find more DE (Crystal has plenty).
As for the King, yes getting it is definitely worth it, but I wouldn't gem it.

another noob trick, what i did this when i was fighting to get my barb king, carry some lightning spells on you so when you see a base with 2k+ in storages drop a few lightning spells and get around 400 de, i know it sounds like a waste but if you have elixir to burn it will speed things up a bit
I would really save the gems up, its not that hard to get 10k Dark elixer on townhall 7, then on townhall 8 get him to 5 ;)
