apathy for events?

Lady, you write so well and convey the feelings of so many of us very well. I gave up last night because trying to read the constant flow of distracting numbers gave me a headache. Certainly just applying statistics to such a large data set can't possibly address the problem when the number is small. I suspect that's actually the whole problem. Coders have to use large numbers and percentages.

For example, I postulate a personal example. One in 66 kids will be diagnosed with some form of autism. Doesn't sound too bad. But in my family four in six have been diagnosed with it. Becomes more of an issue doesn't it. (And I am not complaining). When looking at 200 plus boats, the numbers may look fine but when all the bad ones come at one time, it looks more like my family. And that's all I have to say about that.

I am actually doing more truck orders during this event. I thought to myself that since the profit margin in the town isn't as high, I could certainly use a bit of money, BUT (I know there is always a big BUT in one of my posts :) ) both my farms were close to leveling up so XP looked better to me than TEM for a while. Add to that the large percentage of my barn being used for non food items, tools, and metal bars. I decided to shift my focus for a little while..

Yes yes I know anything extra for doing a boat you would do anyway is like gravy, but when you weigh:
the number of items needed per boat,and
the personal event goal reward of one or two items and
most likely another green voucher

against:
the gift,and
reputation points and
progress toward those 2000 townies needed for that achievement for fewer items,

then the town usually wins.

That's why I think the events are causing the apathy the OP is talking about. You can't even count on the five diamond final reward because we haven't made the goal more times than I care to think about. There is nothing to draw us all together.

Possible solutions (to event malaise only)
Vouchers or decorations for personal goals
Special decoration for final goal
Reasonable total goal amount
Something different to spice things up (as opposed to an activity we would do anyway)
Events that don't happen every week, but maybe once a month. THEY NEED TO BE SPECIAL!

We need something that screams at us and says, " ok so you will have to ease up on your town, boats, truck orders etc for the next four days because we have something SPECIAL for you to do."

Thank you for sharing your own personal circumstances. Using that as an illustration certainly puts things into perspective, and despite every number raining down from on high to the contrary, it certainly doesn't change a situation or make things better in the long run.

It's said numbers don't lie, & also said that numbers can be made to do anything, which begs the questions of which is true, & what numbers are we talking about? It's been my experience most people couldn't give a fig about facts & figures when they're feeling unjustly put upon.

Your example of the factors you weighed in deciding to do orders is very likely the same process many of us farmers find ourselves doing of late, something which we didn't have to do as often before. It seems the town has, for better or worse, caused many to change their playing style, & the result is showing in a variety of ways, the lack of recent successful global events being just one.

The potential solutions to overcome event malaise are all ones which would have my support. It's definitely time to shake things up, try something new, get the sparkle & thrill rejuvenated. All I hope for is that whatever the answer may be, it doesn't come at a heavier cost to my barn or at the expense of my remaining enjoyment of HD.

That's the thing Lady, numbers don't lie. It's the people, who report those numbers to say what they want them to say,who distort the truth. I cringe when I think about the numbers of children who didn't get vaccinated because some idiot chose to mis-represent his research to claim that vaccinations caused autism. I recently read that the researcher who told us all that fat was killing us, and that fish was the reason some people lived longer, used data to support his theory, that he collected during Lent in a Catholic country. Catholics and some Protestants as you may know, eat much more fish in lent than they usually do. There was more but I think you get my drift. I love numbers, but they are cold and leave out the human factor. Having autism, I like facts, figures,routines, but I know I have to live in a world of people so I work hard for myself and to help my children understand you all. (We affectionately call you all neurtyls (rhymes with turtles) because you are neural typical). We like neurtyls, we just don't always understand them.

But I digress. I think the SC will either change the balance factor or introduce something that will even things out. Just like they did for eggs by adding mayo, egg sandwiches, egg sushi and more pies that use eggs,etc. Like many I think we will get a clothing type shop and probably other items to use the odd vegetable or muffin that isn't used as much. We just have to have patience and work through it. Remember when bacon and eggs would over run the paper? People used bacon and eggs mainly because it was a quick way to clear six spaces in the barn. Now we can do the same thing with mayo, salads, sandwiches and other things. Look how fewer sweaters are in the paper now that we have other clothes to make and also smoothies are in smaller numbers because the townies like them. Yes like someone said, tomatoes used to be all over the paper too. I, for one, never find them in the paper anymore. They are quickly purchased by others for salads. I never found raspberries until I posted about it. Now one of my lovely neighbors puts them out frequently when he sees me playing. "Thanks Mike".

We are overdue for an update. It will happen soon I am sure.

I really miss seasonal events, in which we contribute only a certain item and events with double exp, because it seems to me that we've had a lot of double-coin events lately. I'm really looking forward to events with double exp./voucher

There has never been an event with double xp :)

I wonder if it would be possible to have an event that actually improves the Daily Dirt rather than scuppers it, as most events seem to do.
Since the advent of neighbourhoods and the town it was already emptied of many premium goods but most events leave it looking like the remnants of a boy scouts jumble sale after the doors have shut. Some kind of positive incentive to sell stuff would be fun, even if it was just offering XP per sale for a few days!

Any other ideas for new events?

Oh Madge, that made me giggle. But you're absolutely right, and what a good idea for a new event! I hope the folks at SC can muddle through the last few pages of this thread to read this one. Wouldn't xp for selling be an AWESOME event?? I might even sell some of my precious few jams and candies! And TOOLS! :D

I personally LOVE the idea suggested previously of halving the production times of those jams and candies for an event along the lines of the "Great Carrot Debacle" (to quote Haystacker). I would probably start playing in the middle of the night again!! (Which I have finally stopped doing to try to conserve my supplies and resources for day time play.)

If SC distills this thread down and discards all the mumbo jumbo, there are some EXCELLENT suggestions to be found here!

Agreed. I do hope they read through it, even if it is with a wry smile and a long sigh.

I'd like to see the return of a double voucher event like we had in the early days. Boats once gave double coin & tickets. Gold ones seemed to have come at a little better rate during those.
