Actually, it may be part of her plot to make you not want to remove them so you have less gems, meaning you can't boost your barracks as often, meaning less troops go out to war, meaning less of her fellow people die.

As for why they clap, well it is to cure the numbness that resulted from extended hours of repetitive hand motions.
