Im also almost max in th8. I've been finding great loot at gold 3. You can farm millions per hour :D

Psssh . . it's currently in 1700-1799 (please don't tell this secret to anyone).
Perhaps you need to stay longer at certain trophy ranges to see which one works best. Besides, the first base they give you isn't the only one, use the Next Attack button to keep finding more. I just got TH8 and I'm at 1250 and I need to find a good base for about 10 minutes before attack.
