How did the enemy deploy his troops in the middle of my base?

I have been attacked recently and i have walls surrounding my base. The enemy deployed all of his troops in the middle of my base. I thought you couldnt deploy troops in the middle but you had to start out on the outside of the base, hinting the red box that appears when you try to deploy troops. How did he start in the middle of my base?

You had a empty 3x3 hole somewhere inside.

Traps don't count as buildings, so enemies can spawn troops on them.

A picture would be helpful. My guess is that you have a space available. Troops cannot be dropped within 1 tile of a structure. I would go to edit mode and make sure that there is no holes in the glowing yellow when you look at the base.

You probably have too much room left between buildings. When buildings are more than three spaces apart from each other, there will be a gap in which troops can be released. Go to the village edit mode and search for gaps, then close them.
Maybe post a pic of your base - it might be obvious already.
