Someone who is TH8 or higher, could you please tell me if it's worth upgrading the dragon past level 2? I see that the damage and health are not scaling very well with the increase in cost. 30k is still "reasonable", because with 10 of them you can take down a base that has 300k elixir, but I rarely find bases with more.
Is it worth it take down other TH7s and below? No. But if you want to attack TH8s and maybe TH9s, you NEED lvl 3 drags, and if want to take on tougher TH9s and TH10s, you need lvl 4 dragons.
So answer is yes.
Yes, it is worth it. I am town hall 9, and I can definitely see the difference between lvl 2 & 3 drags. That little plus of HP and DPS can make a big difference.
Mass drags will rarely net you an elixir profit. But, when you have excess elixir and need to take down a tough target....pretty solid choice. Yes, they are worth upgrading for wars and revenge attacks.
I would say do it for sure. However if you are still unsure you can wait and do other upgrades first.

If you have the elixer and upgrade to any unit is worth it.
First, I did this and I vote a resounding YES.
Second, have you maxed all your other troops you use most? If not, do those first.
Third, it takes a long time for lvl 2 and 3 ad to bring down a level 3 dragon.
Fourth, I don't do mass dragon, but I do however use one dragon with wizards or minions. The drag soaks up the damage and the others take care of the rest. Drop that dragon at an AD and have wizard healer going on makes for some real damage.
Lastly, remember too that sometimes it's okay to "waste" elixir on those dragons in exchange for Dark Elixir.
If you have nothing left to do, they are 100 percent worth it. Then you are done with dragons until th10
Try to max your dragons they are good troops!
the clear answer is yes, as you will eventually greatly benefit from maxed out dragons, especially whenever you have excess elixir and can cook a full dragon army overnight to raid a big bad base full of gold and DE with this army the next morning.
Just do it, you won't regret it.
Yep and especially for CW. Difference in DPS and even small bump in health between 2 and 3 allows standing up against higher lvl defenses that attack air and more buildings needed to clear in 3 mins.

Usually I can find a base with 300k elixir, making it worth using 8xDragon + 40xArcher + 3xLightning Spell (for the dark elixir or gold), but I rarely see bases with more than that. That means I will be "exchanging" my elixir for other resources, rather than "just gaining other resources" while staying at the same amount of elixir.
However I might do it just to have a bigger chance to score 3 stars in CW against TH8-TH9 like you are saying. Right now my elixir storages are full and I don't need it for anything but upgrades, but I still have days left on the current one...
as a th8 and a recent th9 - I chose to skip dragon upgrade beyond level 2 and instead focused on upgrading balloons instead. In fact i had the same question as you did and just today (a few hours ago), I decided to up my balloons to level 6 instead of dragon- lvl 3 because the balloons upgrade to 6 had huge increase in dps and health points.
In the end, it is up to your style of raids - i prefer balloons over dragon any day so my choice was clear
100% yes - dragons are one of a few upgrades that dont change again until th10 so are pretty decent jumps.
lvl3 dragons and lvl5 rage are a cracking combination.
