I believed that a person could play for free, never spend a dime and become the top player in the world. :(

I thought giants are wallbreakers because i was attacked by them and they broke through my walls.
I thought I could max out my base in a month or two if I was active enough. Also, I thought I should play through the goblin campaign before trying to attack other players, because I wouldn't be ready to fight other players' bases otherwise.
Edit: I'm now th10, almost 400 million GG, and still haven't finished goblin campaign...
Oh, more stuff I'm now remembering - I thought the best way to progress would be to max out my collectors, and to upgrade my town hall level as quickly as possible so that I could build more collectors. I remember thinking of it like the macro economy game of Starcraft, where collectors would be the primary source of income.
I thought that by putting my level 1 archer tower in the path between my army camps and barracks, that it might convince a newly created archer to get on top as she passed.
