Clash of clans is being used in classrooms?!?

So in our school we got an truckload of iPad minis and the teachers was just like.... I think its good for kids to play CoC (by kids i mean 14-16 year olds). Almost everyone in our class was playing CoC already and a friend put their hand up and be like "um ms, we already play this game"

And then it ended to be an noob CoC class and an happy day :)

EDIT: I hear other schools are also doing this.

Some games may be educational and help kids but coc isn't one. I have serious concerns for your countries future if your teachers think letting kids play coc is good and will help them. Sounds more like a lazy teacher who has checked out.

I agree outside of an educational context clash should not be played by kids in class.....but I do think there is a lot to learn about numeracy in the game.

They give us an goal of how much loot we need to gain, after we achived we make an graph on how much gold we spent, dark elixer we spent, elixer we spent.

Then we make another row with how much we earned then we see if we have gained income or lost income.

Then a lot of other junk that I haven't got onto...

Well i guess thats alright. If you were just playing clash without this, Id be *facebrick*ing. But still... 14-16 year olds doing basic math graphing? I could've done this in Year 2 without having to play apps in class

Its optional. Personally i quit last week and I don't want to get addicted again. I only was on try outs. I am not doing this "program" anymore.

This is really worrying for me for a number of reasons.

There is numeracy in COC, but I there isn't really sufficient to challenge the average 14-16 yr old.

This game is a long slog as we all know. What can be taught in an hour? couple of hours?

The game makes use of a somewhat controversial business model. Whilst I have no particular issue with this myself, as a parent, I wouldn't want to see the product pushed in school.

Is this really the best use of limited educational funds - several thousand [insert appropriate currency] spent on IPad minis for the older kids to play coc?

It all depends on how the teacher integrates it in his lessons. Don't think there should be much playtime. Instead of using examples about factories where they make some random item, using CoC related examples might just trigger the students more.

For some reason I really doubt this is actually happening. I actually remember reading a thread on the forums about how teachers should incorporate CoC into their lessons and I think the OP is just making it up that this is going on at his school.

It just doesnt make sense how 14-16 year olds are learning stuff this basic

It maybe true that teachers could lead it onto other examples, but, in my view there must be more appropriate lead-ins to those discussions.

The game may engage some students, but there will be a good number who will view it as a silly/pointless game. Those who are interested are likely to spend more time playing than listening to the follow-on discussions.

All in, still seems like a really bad idea for me.

If you actually use "Brain Power" to play CoC, you're struggling in life.

UK. - not a hope in hell... such a distraction, how it comes to the class room its just not the right place. Math book, pen, pencils and so on, basic but effective. I like coc as a fun hobby, not a task.

There are many things this game got right, it is the reason that many others have cloned and copied the formula. Some have not understood it (dungeon keeper). There are many formulas you can learn from Clash of Clans, that can be passed on to new programmers. I'd be very interested in the pacing formulas for mechanics and units, the slow introduction of increased timers, the science behind the feeling of "earning it" (wall farming). As an example of success, Clash of Clans is to Mobile developers like (latest Unreal / Crytek) game is to PC developers.

If you are going to study mobile development, you'd be hard press to find a greater success story than Clash of Clans.

That may be ok for 7 year olds but if 15-16 year olds are being taught maths that basic I revert back to my original comment. I feel sorry for their countries future

I can confirm that students are solving multivariable mathematical concepts covered in grade 10 curriculum in grade 9 with this game. The game is not where the learning happens, the game acts as a stepping stone and helps create authentic questions for the students.
