Does lightning spell damage air troops? I tried it once on a dragon, didn't work, but I'm wondering if [the attacker] should target it's shadow instead.

It is useless, don't bother, it has so much HP you're better off using archers in a circle around the dragon, and I say circle because of splash damage that the dragon does.
