You have 2 goals to accomplish when hitting a base with dragons:
1) Keep as many as you can alive for as far into the battle as possible, and
2) Locate and destroy w/ heroes or CC troops the key outer "filler" building(s) on either side that will force the dragons to head to the core where the ADs are, otherwise you'll have your dragons farting around on barracks and collectors while Lvl 5/6 ADs eviscerate them from the center.
When you drop a rage, you make the dragons go from 2-shotting buildings to one-shotting them, in a very small radius. they pass through that ring in a matter of 2-3 seconds, making the spell worthless for its remaining duration. The bigger impact is that you have nothing to regenerate the dragons' health after they take hits from black balloons and the ADs. Every time you lose a dragon you lose 10% of your total DPS on your raid. This is why you are able to consistently get 2-stars in a matter of the first 30-40 seconds when you have them ripping through the base with 4 rage spells, but you will never, ever 3-star it. Not unless you're hitting TH7s or TH8s with weak AD, but then you may as well 3-star it with a cheaper army.
People get chopped in my clan if they fail to 3-star a dragon raid b/c they brought lightnings or rages with them, b/c it is such a rookie mistake and they should know better. That's how 10-year olds raid. So don't jump onto this hog-raiding thread and try tagging your dragon raiding woes to the subject when it is entirely user-error.
