The Shield - TH8 Base Design (Farming & War Formations)
Greetings Clashers! I'm EvilTwin, clan leader of Not In The Face. I've been playing for a few months and nearly maxed out th8, but have never been really happy with the popular layouts found online.
First thing to realize at almost every TH level is that you usually have 4-5 strengths that you get to choose from, at the cost of 2-3 weaknesses. I never found the strength/weakness balance that I wanted in a TH8 layout, so I decided to try my own.
My priorities on base design:
- Protect resources in this order: DE > Gold > Elixir
- Provide maximum coverage of splash damage, but focus on coverage of storages.
- Non-obvious location of Hidden Teslas/Giant Bombs and allow for multiple possibilities for double Giant Bomb to deter hog attacks.

The pros of this base:
- Focuses on protecting DE and Gold. At TH8, I've never been short on elixir
- Good splash coverage across the base.
- No Hog-Ring, but 3 different places for double-Giant Bomb to be.
- 8 spots for Hidden Teslas/Giant Bombs to be: Keeps opponents guessing.
- 3 layers of walls on all sides of the core.
- Lots of flexibility to move storages, hidden teslas, giant bombs, and defenses around to suit your needs (i.e. during upgrades or differing resource levels)
Cons of this base:
- Clan castle is lurable. I've tried and tried to get it perfectly in the core, and will continue to do so, but as of now a smart player can do it without much trouble (as is the case in most th8 bases).
- Places a few storages near the edges of the base to be sniped without much effort.
- 1 Extra Wall piece to maintain symmetry. Leave it or throw it in to one of the sides.
- Somewhat weaker to direct attacks from the side versus northern/southern attacks.
- BK not in the core of war base, and easily killed in farming base. Again, you have the flexibility to move him around if you like, I just felt he was a waste in the core of the farming layout, and other buildings had priority in the war layout. YMMV.
Results: (will update as I get more)
2 defenses so far on farming layout: (in each of those defenses, I had ~300k available in gold/elixir and 1500 in DE)
Attack on the top: Standard storage-raid comp from maxed TH8 player. He came from the SE and got torched by my clan castle troops, double mortars, bombs, and southern tesla. His barbs/archers/wizards didn't follow his giants into the base, so weren't able to take out my cc troops nor do any damage do anything other than exterior buildings and 1 elixir storage.
Middle attack: TH snipe.
Attack on the bottom: Kind of a random TH9 comp of level 6 giants/wiz/archers and lvl 2 hogs. Hogs got ejected or blown up by southern bombs/springs and rest of army came from SE. Again, double mortar, tesla, WT, and 4 cannon/archers took care of everyone.

War Defense 1: (30 lvl 2 hogs + dragons) - Only lvl 2 hogs. He successfully lured my CC troops with a giant and some barbs, then killed my wiz with a dragon. Double giant bomb, teslas, and WT dispatched the hogs before they made it 1/2 through the base (south->Left side->top). His barbs and other dragons cleared the top portion of the base for the star. They needed to 3 star me to win the war. Yay for us!

War Defense 2: (mass lvl 3 dragon) - He didn't have his 3rd spell ready, despite having a level 3 spell factory. He would have triple zapped/killed my southern AD with it, but it only weakened a few dragons (along with air mines) before being taken out. One beneficial turn away from the middle of the base and towards the exterior-east of the base allowed him to destroy 2 more buildings and get a star. Barely.

Updates:
As of right now, I'm thinking of switching the BK and the interior-rightside mortar on the war layout. He's just outside of range for protecting the TH from a western attack, which is important to me. Feel free to put him where you like.
Version 1.1 Farming Layout added:
Per a few of KingBrandon's suggestions (page 2), I have switched the SW Wizard Tower and Gold Storage and matched the wall configuration on both layouts (minus the single wallpiece).
Per a suggestion of lastnline (page 2), I alternated the cannon/AT configuration for better air coverage across the base.
In 1.1, I did lose one of the pockets for double giant bomb, where my 3rd tesla was located. The tesla was moved to the NorthWest near the BK. I may move that. Any suggestions?
