As you can see he is going to town hall eight, while I'm am going to town hall seven. I have better defences than him and he is only just upgrading to level five lab now, so he only has the same level troops as me.
Am I taking the game to slowly? Should I upgrade every defence before upgrading town hall? Or is he going too quick?

Yes, MAX OUT TH7 AND 8 BEFORE UPGRADING. Your clannie is upgrading TOO SOON. Tell him to cancel the upgrade while there's still time!
Take your time , you're in thebest loot zones right now. The one going to 8 is premature. Don't rush town hall. Max everything before moving up in town hall levels. Game level is not an indicator of skill or anything, you can donate a lot and be a high level but have low buildings.
Take a look at this thread for an explanation of the loot penalty and available loot. Upgrading Town Hall causes your available loot to decrease. This is the reason most knowledgeable players max out their base before upgrading Town Hall.

He's upgrading to TH8 way prematurely, not even with an up to date lab, let alone troop upgrades? Mostly gold walls and weak splash defense? He's gonna have serious trouble if he finishes that TH8.
You're just fine though. I'm not that convinced you need to be anywhere close to maxed TH6 to safely move to TH7. Just get your extra army camp, barracks, level 4 troops and the improved farming efficiency of a TH7 outweighs any downsides of under-leveled defenses and loot penalties.

It's good to get full pink (lvl 6) walls as soon as you can, because they will take 2 level 5 wallbreakers as opposed to gold walls requiring only 1. I'd say for your early priorities, do a lot of elixir based buildings/upgrades (lab, army camps, barracks, maybe spell factory) and you'll have a lot of gold leftover to put into walls. After your offense is all up to speed, start using the gold on mortars/wiz tower and only do walls when you have extra gold on top of what you need for the towers.Quote:

Go slow MAX EVERYTHING before leaving TH 7. Your in the gold zone now, it only gets harder (much harder) after u leave Th 7.
It gets harder to get resources in the upper TH levels. Wait until EVERYTHING is as high a level as possible, then upgrade your TH.
I was skipping a little ahead of myself. Level 41 now, and only the core of my base has pink walls, and I've not upgraded my canons or mortars or wizard towers enough for TH7 [which I am at currently] let alone 8. So I'm holding out now until I can upgrade some more before going for TH8.
Yes. Keep working on walls throughout. They take so long that your other upgrades will finish at about the same time as the walls if you time it effectively. And timing it well requires some diligence with walls from the start. Make walls a source of pride and keep plugging. You'll be glad you did.Quote:
