During the battle, it's difficult to keep track of hero's health, specially when there are too many troops, explosions, spells on the screen. As a result, heroes die before we can activate ability in time.
My suggestion is to place an HP indicator on the troops deploy bar, right below the heroes' face icons; so that we can always have an eye on the heroes' healths.

Wow good idea! Email this to Supercell! I can barely see the health bar with traps go off and when mortars keep crashing down!

So glad this has been mentioned as my strategies get better I find my heroes more and more essential is attacking however I find myself randomly using the ability guessing that it's time to. I would love to see this! Great idea
