So you want to know about the etiquette of free shields.
We (I, you, they) will usually go by a point of giving other players a free shield if their TH is out of their base. And that's all good. You lose around 5-8 trophies, up to 1000 of each resource and for that you get a free 12 hour shield.
Please note.
If you decide to drop a few teslas around your TH, I will destroy your base and take all your resources that are available to loot.
There is no such thing as etiquette; at least I don't believe in such a thing.
It's all free game.
I personally don't leave TH outside and I don't set traps for that.
But if you go in to gain some trophies just because there is an inviting TH outside, you are taking risks.
Sure, you can go on to demolish the base if you can. The person being attacked knows full well about this possibility too.
And there is a chance you may get revenged regardless of whether you take any extra resources or not.
All part of the game.

LOL trying to be nice and giving someone a free shield when you otherwise would not have attacked them because you couldn't win only to have a teslas spring up and lose you the battle and the trophies
